Apple TV's Missing Library Reload Button

Add me to the list of those affected by this. Thanks for the tip about toggle the Unplayed filter on/off. Beats having to restart for sure.

Sadly, the very fact that Plex has no REAL support line, even if only for paying customers, tells us all we need to know about how much they care about the user experience. Foolishly, I bought a lifetime pass, so now I have no bargaining chip. I can’t even threaten to cancel my subscription!

My whole family hates the: new layout, no refresh, “NOT show unwatched” properly, attitude of the developers!!! We use apple TV’s

Wow. I finally grew tired enough of this issue that I went searching for an answer only to see this article that goes back to April and still no solution. Do Plex developers read this forum or is there another place I should be going to get a response from them?

Plex developers are aware of this issue; nothing has changed since my previous posts:

  • This appears only to be an issue on the Library screen/view; if that’s not the case, then please post the particulars.

  • There is a workaround which is not ideal but does work: filter then un-filter the view.

  • From what I have gathered, the Reload button will NOT be coming back, not even for the interim.

  • The ultimate goal is to fix this on the Plex server side; I have no idea when that will happen as Plex doesn’t share timelines for the most part.

I am filtered to Unwatched by default. If I turn off the filter and then turn it back on, it does not do a refresh. Is that what you mean?

Yes, that is what I mean; and if that doesn’t work, then that’s new and annoying :stuck_out_tongue:

What’s the Plex app version you’re using and what version of PMS do you have installed?

That workaround definitely works for me. I open the filter section, uncheck unwatched, check it back on, and then back out to the library. When I do that, it rebuilds.

When you turn the filter off you need to go back to the Library view, then go back and turn the filter back on again.

Ridiculous arrogance from the developers to ignore this problem. What possible reason is there for not putting the Reload button back? Do they think that we’re all liars when we say automatic refresh doesn’t work?

No they do not.

I’m just adding my comments to the thread so there is just another user pushed all the way to the forums due to this issue. 2 weeks ago I converted from using my Xbox One X to the apple tv 4k as my main Plex device. On the Xbox I never saw this issue and everything was very smooth. In the last two weeks I have seen many issues (not app functionality) that I felt it was necessary to come to the forums and just add to the thread. I’m running the following:
PMS: 1.18.0.1944
TVOS: 13.0
EVP: On
Plex App on Apple TV: 2.8 (13363)
This issue with duplication or refresh is a big deal and causes much concern and has impacted my family from even finding the show they want to watch. Since you are able to click on the duplicated show and then bounce right back out to main screen and the then the shows are correct tells me this will have to be a developers fix in an upcoming release. Please hurry. Teaching my family how to compensate for a bug is not a solution. Love plex and won’t go to another platform. Just want to help make this awesome platform even better…

It’s really hard to believe that a company that appeared to be so focused on usability and customer service has just ignored these concerns from everyone. Has there been a change in management/ownership/leadership?

And, on a related topic, has anyone abandoned their AppleTV for something that just works better with the current version of Plex? At this point, I’ve cut the cable and Plex is my overall delivery system for all of my entertainment. But, ;their AppleTV app just ruins the entire experience.

A lot of people like Emby for an alternative front end of their Plex server.

I’ve tried others but just haven’t had any luck finding something that work as well. :-/

As a side note; I changed the name of this thread to better reflect the issue. I originally made this thread as a question but it’s definitely now the de facto thread for discussing this issue. The name now reflects that.

I feel that one clarification is needed: there would really be no need for a Reload button IF the Plex app for Apple TV worked properly, i.e. if it updated its library lists reliably whenever things change on the server side.

The goal to dispense with a Reload button is not a bad one in theory. If everything works fine, it’s not needed.

The problem is that things are not working fine in the Plex app for Apple TV. The problem for me started fairly recently (+/- 1 month), but has since spread to all my libraries on the Apple TV. At first I thought it might be linked to the number of items in my folders, which has been steadily increasing, but I’ve removed all kinds of stuff and it’s still happening.

On the server side (i.e. on my desktop computer), as soon as I change the contents of the folders that are monitored, the changes are immediately reflected in the Plex libraries as displayed by the Plex app for macOS.

However, those same libraries in the Plex app for Apple TV fail to be updated accordingly and still display stuff that has since been deleted, and they also fail to display stuff that’s been added. That’s when a “Reload” button would be needed and when the workaround with the Unwatched filter works.

But the button or the workaround would NOT be needed if the Plex app for Apple TV itself worked as expected.

I don’t see how this problem can be fixed by a server update, since things appear to be working fine on the server side.

It’s a problem with the Plex app for Apple TV itself. I don’t know when exactly it started. (Based on this thread, it looks like some people started having the problem months before I did.) Since my Apple TV is configured to update its tvOS apps automatically, I can’t link the bug to a specific version number for the tvOS Plex app.

But it’s clearly a bug in the tvOS Plex app for Apple TV. And it’s a really bad one, which makes it all the more frustrating that the Plex folks are staying completely silent about this and not giving us a way to report it beyond these forum discussions — especially when some of us are playing Pass customers.

I have relayed (at least twice in this thread) Plex’s plans for this issue. There isn’t anything else they are likely to share at this point.

They are fully aware of this issue.

If you say so. Would be more reassuring to have something official.

I do.

As you wish, this is from an Employee, posted earlier in this thread:

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve switched to Emby and love it. A nice responsive customisable client.
I feel sorry leaving Plex after so many years but I’ve become fed up with this.

Late to the party but did you actually mean to say Emby or did you mean Infuse (or MrMC)?
I’m fairly sure you can’t use the Emby client as a front end to PMS, but you can the other two.
Anyway as a side note Emby on tvOS truly sucks. Hell it can’t even play HDR yet.

Ha sorry you’re right, I meant Infuse. Good golly I’ve read about Emby so much here I might have as well drank THAT koolaid! LOL
