I just noticed that Spotify streams to the watch now. Shouldn’t that mean that Apple opened their APIs to support that for other developers?
Can you sync to the watch? That’s what’s needed!
No. You cannot sync.
Would also very much like an Apple Watch app to sync music for offline playback.
iTunes allows this. I’d like to do it with my own music from my own Plex server.
My current workaround… isn’t great at all.
Use Overcast Pro ($10/year). Allows uploading of your own personal files. So I can copy songs one by one and upload them to Overcast.fm, which then syncs them to my watch. That gets me one list of songs which will play in order.
As far as whether or not this can be done for Plex. Check out AVsub. It is an iOS app with an Apple Watch module. It works with Subsonic/Airsonic/and all the other XXXXsonic music streaming forks. On your iPhone, you “cache” music to your phone, basically download music by playlist. Then you can set those playlists to “sync” from your phone to your Apple Watch.
Overcast is another example of this. I ‘subscribe’ to PodCasts, which are automatically downloaded to my iPhone on WiFi for offline listening (or listening without using cellular data). Those podcasts downloaded to my phone can automatically be synced to my watch for offline/disconnected listening.
Plex is SO close. I have a Plex app on the iPhone. It accesses my full music library including playlists. I have several playlists “synced” to my iPhone. I just need the last step to send those to the Apple Watch. With 16GB in Apple Watch 4, that would be plenty of music for the gym, running, etc.
Again - not looking to live stream music on my watch. That would require cellular, or my phone to be in bluetooth range, in which case I might as well use the phone. In those cases, perhaps a simple Apple Watch remote would be helpful to control streaming content selection/pause/play on the phone.
If you guys can bring this to apple watch and possibly include tidal offline syncing, I would def drop apple music
Having had music stored on my NAS using Plex for over a year now and with WatchOS6 bringing a new audio SDK, I’d love to see Plex get ahead of the competitors and bring out a watch app with both streaming and offline music storage options.
Like many I have of course used streaming as I have a large music collection stored for use with a Sonos already and using it on my phone already for streaming use, the ability to use it on my watch would be brilliant.
I’m voting to see offline syncing of music playlist to Apple Watch. I’m not looking for streaming either, just let me load a music playlist to my watch for workout music so I can finally ditch the iPhone while running. Pretty please!
I also want to see the functionality… as stated, even if it is only the music side. I use my Plex to listen to audio books, and the ability to listen from my watch would be much more convenient!
Plex Music to the Apple Watch please!!!
+1 for Plex on Apple watch. save music/playlists/audiobooks … on the watch for offline listening would be fantastic
Please give us this one. This is a must for the apple watch. I have Audiobooks, Music and Podcasts that I want to listen while running without the need to have my iPhone around because is too big. I know that Watch OS 6 have the Podcast app, and it works very well, but for the music and audiobooks that I already have, it is a little bit more difficult in the process to sync it to the watch. I need to download the music to the phone first, then sync it with the watch. The space in the phone is not too big so I need to erase and sync new music every time I need to listen to other albums that i have in my server. For the audiobook it does not let me sync my own audiobooks that I purchase years ago that I have already on the Plex server and it only shows me the few that I buy from Apple. It does not sync if I continue to listen the book on the phone and I cant choose the chapters, so is a little bit confusing if I need to rewind to listen something or go back to listen something that I missed. For now I always need to carry my phone with me every time I want to workout or go for a run.
WatchOS 6 now has a streaming audio API which would be awesome to use. No need to carry around a phone to consume media while out and about with just the watch!
I’d love this, as well. I’m not interested in Apple Music, but love that my Apple Watch can start and stop playback, skip tracks, etc. from the Music app on my iPhone. It just seems inexplicable that I can’t have the same level of control when playing from the Plex app.
Note that other 3rd party apps already allow such support - including Amazon Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, etc. It really seems that Plex should be included in this club.
Is there a technical reason why this may not be possible, or is it just not yet prioritized for development? If the latter, is there any way of prioritizing this feature, so it can be pursued in the near future?
Even the comparably small App DS Audio now allows the sync of titles to the Apple Watch. It is also possible to use the watch as a companion. It would be so wonderful if these functions could also be provided by the Plex app.
Yes, I’d love to be able to skip seconds backwards and forwards, toggle subtitles, etc from my Apple Watch as I often play Plex content from my iPhone to a TV via the HDMI adapter so it’s all the way on the other side of the room.
With podcasts, would love to use with Apple Watch and sync podcast offline to watch…
+1. to enable sync music for offline listening
+1 plus
+1. Waiting for devs update now that watchOS 6 is out
+1 sync music for offline listening
