Apply Labels to Entire Libraries

Asking for the ability to apply labels to entire libraries in order to allow top-down inheritance for kids content.

This feature has been suggested in the past but closed, and I’m not sure why. The alternative suggestions in previous threads were unnecessarily complex, like splitting up TV shows by content rating and nesting those folders. Most of us have automatic TV library management making this suggestion unworkable (and frankly absurd when labels already exist.)

Let me explain:

Libraries:
Kids Movies (all kid friendly)
Kids TV (all kid friendly)
Movies (part kid friendly)
TV (part kid friendly)

All items in Kids Movies/TV are kid-friendly. Only some items in regular Movies/TV libraries are kid-friendly. I’ve been tagging appropriate items in the adult libraries as “kid friendly”. Unfortunately, the way tags work, this also means that I must tag every single item that gets added to the kids libraries as well.

I would like to be able to apply the “Kid Friendly” label to the Kids Movies/TV libraries to force top down inheritance so I don’t have to tag every single item that gets added there. They are kids libraries - I should be able to add media and be done with it.

The alternative suggestion would be to refine the restriction profile and/or options available to limit kids access based on the content ratings. As it is now it doesn’t do a very good job, and there’s no way to allow an exception for an item if it’s rated incorrectly. The labels allow granular customization and full control, but it would be great to apply to the top library.

I couldn’t find any closed suggestions for this topic… but there’s already an existing one. Please comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.

There’s another suggestion that’s describing an alternative approach by assigning restrictions (e.g. based on labels) for individual libraries.

Thanks for the heads up! There were at least two old threads that asked for this. They were closed long ago for inactivity, but this feature request continues to come up.

Labels for Libraries @wesman
Plex Sharing Labels & Libraries @mtkeane

I’m confused by the pushback this request gets in different threads. The way labels work, the need to apply top-down labels to libraries has been explained fairly well, especially for managing kid-appropriate content across multiple libraries. Technically speaking, it doesn’t seem like a huge ask to add a text label field to libraries, but I’m no developer.

Can all 4 be collapsed or linked? It looks like those two above were created before voting was a thing.

(re: the second link you pasted. Maybe I’m missing something, but it seems to ask for functionality that is already present with labels – the ability to exclude/include specific items. Judging by the example provided, they’re not using labels correctly.)

Those were just regular discussion threads. Those are automatically closed after some months of inactivity.

The 2nd link from my post is asking for an option to apply sharing restrictions per library.

I realize that, but it’s the same feature request over 9 years that keeps resurfacing in threads and comments regardless of what forum it’s filed under. I doubt this board even had feature suggestions/voting in 2015 (did it?).

re: the 2nd link, it’s the same ask in effect - applying restrictions(labels) to individual libraries - but with the opposite logic (restricting rather than allowing). Labels already restrict access if they’re not applied, that’s why the user’s movies all disappear. This user is asking essentially for the same thing - to be able to apply restrictions(labels) to individual libraries (or in their specific case, to select which libraries those restrictions(labels) apply to.) I had an identical comment to this feature request on a similar thread re: content ratings for kids. Even allowing admins to exclude libraries from sharing restrictions/labels would be a positive step.

Bottom line, all of these feature requests that have been cited are describing the same problem: if admins don’t apply the label to every single item in a library, then those items won’t have the desired behavior (show/hide) in the library. If we can apply labels/restrictions at the library level, this is no longer an issue.

Having lurked here long enough, I doubt this will ever see the light of day, but I wanted to compile these requests and express the need clearly in the slim chance someone at Plex gives this a passing glance.
