bare with me @MovieFan.Plex and I’ll give an good example…
I have several libraries
Adult Movies
Adult TV Shows
Kids Movies (Disney and the Like)
Kids TV Shows (Disney, Disney JR, Nic, NicJr, and the like)
And Others
I Also have several kids from 4 to 17
All Kids should have access to Kids Movies and Kid TV Shows… not not all Adult Movies and Adult TV Shows
Sure, I should restrict them to those Libraries but
There are shows in the TV Shows that every one watches (Big Bang Theory, The Flash, Nova, etc…)
And Other TV Shows the middle aged ones can watch
and still other the older ones can watch…
It’s a bit of a pain to remember to correctly label, every movie, every tv show, every episode, in every library.
If Objects in Plex had inheritance, I could label a Library “Kid-Friendly” Then everything in that library would inherit “Kid-Friendly”… Example, Label “Kids Movies” with “Kid-Friendly” than anything added to that library in the future would also be labeled “Kid Friendly”.
Also (and extremely useful) label on Adult TV Show “Kid-Friendly” and all seasons and all episodes would then inherit “Kid-Friendly”… BUT ONLY that TV Show.
That would be awesome if Plex had that feature. Though I can see the inheritance being a pain and could be VERY complicated if you start adding/moving media around.
I have my libraries setup almost exactly like yours. I go through the same thing when adding ‘adult tv’ to the kids account.
Luckily, the way I have my adult tv organize, I can add any series from it to the kids account .
The only thing I can think of that could help you out is use a different approach when creating libraries.
Something like…
TV-Y, only shows of TV-Y
TV-Y7, shows of TV-Y7 and below.
TV-G, shows of TV-G and below.
TV-PG, shows of TV-PG and below.
TV-14, shows of TV-14 and below.
TV-MA, shows of TV-MA and below… Basically, this library has access to all the content
You can imagine, the initial setup of this would be CRAZY but once done just add the kid to your account and give them one of the libraries.
I still don’t understand the need to label an entire library. For the user that can access an entire library, allow them to share that library without any restrictions. For those that will have limited access, I assume you will go through and select what they have access to, for that you can multi select these movies/shows and mass edit the labels in 1 shot. You could use this technique to mass-edit the entire library too, but I still not seeing the need for all items in a library to have a specific label.

I believe the OP is getting at is, let’s say kid Lisa can have any one or more libraries AND any content under some label/group no matter where that item is and no matter what library it under.
That would be very handy to select a label. If every kid cartoon you add to plex can have a label KidCartoonTV-Y7 then you can give access to any user regardless of what library the show is in.

Thanks. I get it now. If a user needs access to all of 1 library but only part of another, they need the label for everything in that first library. There is nothing in Plex that would auto label a video, the OP will need to do it by hand.
@MovieFan.Plex
Not to backtrack but no matter how you slice it, the OP would have to do a crap ton of stuff to make it work. Both ways (the original and OP suggested) would take so much time to do.
@wesman
The way it is now is; Libraries are inherit by default. Any new shows added will be seen by whoever has access the that library. If you what a kid to have access to only 1 show from the library then you will have to create a new library with those shows included. This may be a pain but it’d be the same with labels.
You’ll get less libraries but end up with more labels. I mean initially all new content you add to the library AdultShows will have to have the label MA-ForAdultOnly and you would have to change it to whatever the rating should be…
@wesman
I understand what you want do. In theory the idea sounds great but could get very complicated and out of control real fast. Troubleshooting would be a pain.
In simplest form, there are 3 permission factors for plex, (users, libraries, filesystem).
USERS are tied to libraries. LIBRARIES are tied to folders. FOLDERS are tied to your filesystem and how you organized it.
Remember libraries are labels. That’s how we group things together.
Instead of labeling libraries how about “labeling” the filesystem.
Follow me on this, imagine you have all your content on a single drive grouped into folders and someone(baby, kid, teenager, adult) came up to you and asked to watch something, what folder are you going to give access to?
If we use my examples above then here…
TV-Y, No links within this folder.
TV-Y7, Within this folder you have links to TV-Y
TV-G, Within this folder you have links to TV-Y7, TV-Y
TV-PG, Within this folder you have links to TV-G, TV-Y7, TV-Y
TV-14, Within this folder you have links to TV-PG, TV-G, TV-Y7, TV-Y
TV-MA, Within this folder you have links to all the others.
If your media was already organized in this way, you could make 6 libraries(maybe 7… Can’t forget porn)…
When you add a user to plex you can select a single library each most of the time. If your adding a baby, then give them library TV-Y. And so on…
And when you get a new show you can add to one of the folder above based on rating…That way everyone always gets what they should have.
I agree… What folder was it again… I’m faced with that all the time…
You could if working with one big ass drive is make…
X:\TVShows – every thing is here, all ratings including TV-MA.
X:\TVShows\TV-14
X:\TVShows\TV-14\TV-PG
X:\TVShows\TV-14\TV-PG\TV-G
etc…
Give adults access to X:\TVShows, this will include everything you have.
And maybe give the teens access to X:\TVShows\TV-14 which will give them access to all TV-14 and below content.
/TV Shows - HOME to adults.
/Erotic Confessions (1994)
/Hotel Erotica (2002)
/The Best ■■■ Ever (2002)
/The Erotic Traveler (2007)
/TV-14 - HOME to the teenagers
/Heroes (2006)
/TV-14/TV-PG - HOME to older kids
/Malcolm in the Middle (2000)
/Knight Rider (1983)
/The Middle (2009)
/TV-14/TV-PG/TV-G - HOME to kids
/The Simpsons (1989)
/TV-14/TV-PG/TV-G/TV-Y - HOME to babies
/Teletubbies (1997)

At lease all shows are in one place…somewhat…
Actually I would set it up like that except that I would have it more simply set so that content does not overlap by directory:
X:\TVShows\TVMA\ – every thing is here that does not fit in the other directories (1)
X:\TVShows\TV-14\ – Contains everything that is lower than TVMA and Greater than TVPG (2)
X:\TVShows\TV-PG\ – Contains everything below TV14 and greater than TVG (3)
X:\TVShows\TV-G\ – Contains everything below TVPG (4)
That would mean that you can respect Plex’s structure conventions.
Then I would set up four libraries:
LibraryAdult - includes all four directories
LibraryTeen - includes directories 2, 3 and 4
LibraryChild - includes directories 3 and 4
LibraryYoungChild - includes only directory 4
This takes advantage of the fact that Plex allows libraries to overlap. The each person can be a user and you can share the single library that they should have access to.
It seems to be the easiest solution that would work under Plex as it is.
That is exactly what I do (did) when my granddaughters visit. Of course now that they are 11 and 13 they are officially more mature than I so they have unrestricted access to my media. BTW: The younger GD is the more mature one of the two but they were so well behaved (Mommy is a school teacher and Daddy is a decorated Marine) that I never really had to restrict them. The only time I had to worry was when they had a slumber party and it got quite.
