Artist/Album/Background image files article proposal

People have been asking how to add images for albums, artists, and backgrounds for years. The hoped-for Help page has yet to appear, and all we can do is search the forums for the various posts where someone has posted a version of what is needed. So I have thrown together the following article as a proposal. I post it here to get feedback on its accuracy and clarity. Eventually I would like it to either be posted to the HowTo forum, or incorporated into the Help articles (or both).

I started with the information posted by @OttoKerner in this thread several years ago. Since the current “Adding Music Media From Folders” article only describes one recommended folder structure, this proposed article also only addresses that structure.

ALBUM COVER ART

The album cover image file may either be in a discrete file or embedded in the music tracks. If you use a discrete file, the file must be in the same folder as the music tracks. If the album is a multi-disc album and each disc is in a sub-folder, the album cover image file must be in the disc 1 folder. If the album cover is embedded in the tracks, and there is also a discrete image file present in the proper location, Plex will use the discrete file, since embedded images tend to be of lower resolution.

For all images, Plex supports these image formats:
jpg, jpeg, png, tbn

Supported filenames for album covers (where <ext> is one of the format extensions above):

    album.<ext>
    poster.<ext>
    default.<ext>
    cover.<ext>
    folder.<ext>

RECOMMENDED FOLDER STRUCTURE

If your music files are organized in the recommended structure, the following lists explain the supported filenames, and where they should be located.

ARTIST POSTERS

Artist posters must be in the "Artist" folder. Plex will recognize any of the following filenames as the Artist poster: 
    artist.<ext>
    artist-poster.<ext>
    artist-default.<ext>
    artist-cover.<ext>
    artist-folder.<ext>
    poster.<ext>
    default.<ext>
    cover.<ext>
    folder.<ext>

ARTIST BACKGROUND

Artist background images must be in the "Artist" folder. Plex will recognize any of the following filenames as the Artist background: 
    artist-fanart.<ext>
    artist-art.<ext>
    artist-background.<ext>
    artist-backdrop.<ext>
    fanart.<ext>
    art.<ext>
    background.<ext>
    backdrop.<ext>
