Artist Artworks Disappears upon Metadata Refresh

Server Version#: Version 1.28.0.5973
Player Version#: Version 4.85.1

Looking at release notes for Plex Media Server 1.28.0.5973 I was hopeful that this issue would be fixed due to this comment …

(Android) Music artwork on Android based servers could disappear after refreshing metadata (#13677)

I’m in the process of adding my music to plex for the first time and so far have just shy of 200 artists added but have two which exhibit this problem.

Steps to reproduce …

  1. Add albums for artists Get Scared or The Big Pink.
  2. Initially the artist poster is loaded without issue.
  3. Then refresh the metadata for both artists.

Result:
The artist poster now disappears upon refresh. If I edit the artist I see the following …

Logs attached below are from doing a full plex dance for both artists and their albums along with a refresh afterwards.

Pure speculation:
Something I have noticed looking at https://fanart.tv these two artists don’t have any artist posters. Maybe when plex does the initial metadata download it goes beyond fanart tv and grabs it from some other location (last fm) but upon a refresh it does not and empties the artwork.

This is a different issue to that one affecting Android servers.

This happens when we’ve indexed an image from a source like lastfm, fanarttv, etc. and then those images get removed from the source but we still link to them. I think there is already an open issue for this one, I’ll check with the team. This isn’t a PMS issue, as we just read what the cloud provider gives us.

In the case of Get Scared we have a link to this image: https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/300x300/00c58190564a4c649344834b7200b2ab.png which just returns an error from the source.

Thank you for the explanation, that makes sense. Still strange it gets an image on the initial metadata fetch and download done when matching.

I’ll see if I can get a decent poster myself and add it as a local asset. Again, thanks for the explanation.
