no dice unfortunately
Strange. Did you refresh the artist after you did the Plex Dance?
Just for fun, I added the album Ultraviolet to my library, with the same genre tags you used. The Artist, “All About Eve” immediately came up with the associated genres from the album. I then changed the genre tags on just one track to Country and Classical. When I refreshed the artist, the new tags from the album/tracks were reflected in the artist. Note: the new genres did not show for the artist until I refreshed the artist, simply refreshing the album (or adding a new album) made no difference. The artist maintains the genres that were previously associated until you refresh the artist - in your case, there were none.
Hmmm, that’s very strange! I wonder if I have some sort of setting hidden somewhere that’s preventing this from happening? The fact it’s working for you is a good sign at least. But yeah, I did the artist level refresh once it came back in.
I’m also having an unrelated issue with last.fm metadata no longer coming down to fill in the gaps where allmusic isn’t available, so I’m starting to wonder if I need to backup the DB and do a full re-install.
Out of curiosity, what server version are you running?
EDIT: really appreciate you helping me out with this btw!
I’m using server version 1.20.5.3562. But, as I mentioned in a previous post, for several months, I’ve had to refresh the artist If I know for sure that a new album has different genre tags than other albums. Otherwise, the artists genres remain the same as the initial scan. I’m not convinced that the nightly maintenance actually changes anything either, but I’m told it’s supposed to happen
too bad we ain’t doing anything!
I’m out of ideas. Maybe try a “Fix Match” on the artist, and/or unmatch the artist and then re-match it. It might reload the proper metadata.
I can confirm @destroy_musick findings that nothing works to get the genre tags to even show up. I’ve added a completely new artist and it only shows the stupid style tags (which I’d like to disable please @elan). Settings is the same as shown above Plex Music and Genre: Embedded Tags. Plex Dance should be obsolete since we use the new scanner.
@solitaryreign and @destroy_musick - I’m going to attach some logs where it all works for me, everytime, I’m sure. If you attach logs showing it doesn’t work, someone might be able to figure out the difference.
To make it easier on whoever may look at the logs, include the artist and album you added or tried to update, and the approximate time.

I added new artist “All About Eve” with new album “Ultraviolet” between 5:00 and 6:00 AM. Shortly thereafter I changed genre tags and refreshed the Artist manually.
The only way I can see the styles is in the edit window for the album or artist. The styles Plex has downloaded are basically hidden.
I’m adding logs here as well. I added the album Guilty of Everything by the Band Nothing at around 13:45h. Hope that helps!

This get’s weirder by the minute.

Here’s mine, I refreshed Pleasure Cross EP by Pleasure Cross at around 16:30 - 16:45
@solitaryreign I don’t even have the style tags show on the Music artist entry, so I have been able to generally ignore it. I believe it gets those values from allmusic
I believe it gets those values from allmusic
Yeah I know, but please don’t start with allmusic… this is rather upsetting, especially regarding similar artists or the complete lack thereof for smaller artists in comparison to last.fm. ![]()
I actually created a small C# utility that swaps out the similar artists from the lackluster allmusic one to the last.fm one. If you’re good at coding or fancy a little coding project, it’s a good one to do! Taught me alot how the database is structured
The next gripe for me is that my agent seems to no longer go to last.fm for biography information now, despite a last.fm link existing for over 2 months now on some musicbrainz artists
I actually created a small C# utility that swaps out the similar artists from the lackluster allmusic one to the last.fm one
Oh my, please share!
It’s definitely not fit for public consumption just yet (some hardcoded DB values and plex tokens) but I’m planning to make it available soon-ish
i just checked the code, and indeed, i was misremembering; when refreshing the artist, if the preference for genres is to get them from embedded tags, the artist reads all of the album genres and uses them. so it should be working.
hmmm, I definitely have that set so not sure why it’s not behaving. Is there anything else I can check?
EDIT: gonna back up the DB and do a full reinstall, see if that does the trick
can you refresh an artist and then grab logs from web and post them?

Re-install didn’t make any difference from what I can see. Here are the logs, I refreshed an artist called Gender Roles at around 21:45
I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the bug I reported with flac files way back in Oct of 2019 here: As far as I can tell from my test library, that glitch still exists.
I actually reported it earlier, but I can’t find that thread.
In a nutshell, Plex reads the embedded genre tags in flac files for an album and applies them, but does not update the artist with those tags. Refreshing the artist won’t have any affect either. It’s an odd bug, because ogg files work properly, and my understanding is that the both use the same format, VorbisComment, for embedded tags
Here’s screenshots of an example:
The album “Luck of the Draw” is in mp3 format, the album “Streetlights” is in flac format. The only genres shown for the artist, Bonnie Raitt, are from the mp3 files, even though Plex properly reads and displays the genres from the flac files. I would imagine if all of the files were in the flac format, the artist would not have any genres.
logs from the server immediately after I refreshed both albums, and then the artist.

EDIT: at one time there was a problem with mp4/m4a files too. depending on the software used to create the tags, genres wouldn’t show up properly. The only album I have in m4a format in my test library will only show the first genre, even though all of the files have more than one genre according to MP3Tag.
That’s a great shout, I’ll check against some non-flac files later today and see if that matches
Bingo! It seems to be only my flac files that are effected, my MP3 collection seems to be pulling these in just fine against the artist. It’s very strange, because it can read it at an album level, but then not populate it to an artist level based on that?
