Music: data from artists incomplete

Since what it seems version 1.22.2.xxxx, Music Artists agent does not retrieve several metadata for new artists:

  • no posters available, though when the artist is first added, a poster is chosen
  • no genre, mood…
  • no similar artists
  • no popular tracks

For instance, I added Bob Sinclar or James Brown, and none of these data appear.

Has anyone had this issue?

Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: 4.54.5

Thanks for your answer.

Prefer local metadata is not checked, but it has never been checked.

For the rest, all my files are stored in the same folder/file structure and naming conventions :

/Music
   /Artist
      /Album (year)
         01 - Track name.ext

The problem is not on individual albums, which are recognized correctly, but only on the metadata downloaded for the Artists, and only those added after the last 2 updates of PMS.

If you’ve never had “Prefer local metadata” enabled, then Plex should be downloading the metadata as it did before, and ignoring any tags you might have embedded in the files. It sounds like Plex is having troubles making a proper match. The only thing I see different from mine in your file and folder naming is the inclusion of the year in brackets. The support article for naming music files doesn’t mention adding the year - I don’t know if including that would throw the scanner/agent off.

Curious, do you have the option to “Fix Match” at either the Artist or Album level? If the year is throwing a wrench into the works, you might be able to correct it there. Also, Musicbrainz lists at least 20 “James Browns” and a couple of “Bob Sinclars” so Plex might not have enough data simply from your file structure to determine a proper match.

Yes, I can confirm this is an issue.

While I believe the issue is the same, I will point out that the issue is occurring for me when I add music from TIDAL to my local library (I have not added any new local files).

New artists and albums do not show any metadata.

Could you try and add a new local file?

The only metadata downloaded for artists are the bio.

Here is an example:

I may add that I tried to manually match the artist to force a re-download: the artist is rightfully found, but nothing more than the bio is downloaded.

Weird, you’re right. I get nothing after adding an album or an album that creates a new artist to my library from TIDAL, but I see that same as you when adding local files.

It does seem to grab some metadata for albums as well (again for local files), but doesn’t get everything.

And I have it set to use both local and Plex Music for album art. You can see that not working for a newly added album, but an album previously added that download all metadata.

Glad to see I am not alone! Thanks for reporting back!

It sounds like Plex is having troubles making a proper match.

Actually, what is strange is that the match is properly done, as a bio and one poster are downloaded, but that’s it: no other posters are available, and all other fields are not populated.

Trying to fix match or unmatched and match again doesn’t do anything more.

This is just for artists added in the last couple of PMS versions.

Which logs should I check to investigate further?

It gets a little weirder. I occasionally try to add an album and see if maybe it was just a server side problem with one of the agents, and this morning I thought everything was working, until it didn’t.

After adding the James Taylor album Sweet Baby James from TIDAL, Plex started to scan and refresh the metadata. You can see in the screenshots below that the metadata was there until it finished, then it disappeared.

I’m not sure about the actual album. I tried again to see but didn’t see any metadata displayed.

Here are logs after it was added and did a metadata refresh:
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-04-08_05-14-39.zip (6.2 MB)

Weird indeed. It does not seem to affect many people though, or few people have noticed it.

Ha. I’ve been trying to figure out which one of these is true. If it is a problem with PMS 1.22.2, you would think a lot more people would suddenly be having this issue as it was just given a public release.

This is happening on my end as well. With my latest build upgrade (a few days ago I believe), the only field that gets matched content is the Genre. I rather enjoy choosing different artist pictures so I do this quite often but with a recent update nothing seems to populate when Matching.

Thanks for adding to this thread and reporting.

I created a test music library and added a local album and it seemed to work. However, if I add an album from TIDAL, it still doesn’t work. Do you have TIDAL? Are you able to test?

EDIT: I’d also like to add that I’ve added a few movies and a TV series during this time, and there was no problem with those libraries.

And you can see above that it had no issues grabbing metadata for the artist, it just disappeared – that doesn’t seem to hint at a network issue. Library settings haven’t changed.

TIDAL works fine, I’ve been listening to local and TIDAL tracks all day.

Some metadata will download for local files (and all of it appeared to download when I added an artist to a test library, but that artist is already present in the other library – not sure if that matters) and it appears to be downloaded (at the artist level, anyway) when adding a TIDAL album of a new artist to my music library.

I’ve looked through my logs somewhat, but nothing sticks out. Of course, I’m not really even sure what I’m looking for!

Thanks for your input.

Just did the Plex Dance as you suggested. Unfortunately, it did not solve the issue.

Regarding the logs, like @Noah0504 I am not sure what to look for. And should I check Enable Plex Media Server debug logging and/or Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging ?

Just created a new “Test” music library and added just one artist: same result. The only fields populated are the Bio and a Poster (with no posters available to choose from when editing the artist).

Concerning albums from this artist, fields seem properly populated.

The issue is just on the Artist fields for me.

So, I created another test library and added an artist that was not already in my other music library and am still getting the same results. I assume when I did this the last time, everything was there because I already had the artist in another library?

Going through the logs after trying to add an album from TIDAL, I see this:
