Asustor Plex server Dead after 1.40.1.8395 install

Well, I guess I had a good run while it lasted. I have seen various posts with this being an issue and I am sure plex will say it isn’t a problem with the patch…

That said, I am in the process of having to copy something like 11.8 TB of content out of the plex library. Apparently, I have to completely blow away the entire plex folder for a reinstall to work. Luckily, I have storage to spare, but needing to wait something like 16 more hours for this to complete only so I can reinstall and wait another 24 hrs to get my content back on server is annoying.

I am just hoping I don’t run into issues trying to reinstall the software. I know trying to do so by just removing the plex library folder instead of the entire plex folder did not work.

If anyone else has had to go this route I would be interested in hearing how it went. Thanks!

The Plex Data Folder is 11.8TB?

Can you provide details on what happened?

Also, compress/zip up the server log files and attach them to the thread.

I have already removed the folder with those logs and reinstalled… unfortunate that didnt work and my google foo pointed to needing to remove the entire plex folder which is why it is so large… i have lots of content on it.

I actually updated the version a few days ago, but only went to use it today ans norticed it was completely down both locally and online.

Where did your Google foo point you? There is a lot of bad info on the Internet about how to setup & use Plex.

Is the 11.8 TB your media files or the Plex Data Folder (database, thumbnails, etc.)?

You should not have to move your media files to re-install Plex Media Server.

If the Plex Data Folder (/volume1/Plex/Library) is 11.8TB, then something seems very wrong. You might be able to clean out unnecessary info instead of moving the entire directory.

To give you a reference, my server has ~2000 movies, ~2000 TV show episodes, & ~2000 songs. The Plex data folder is 100 GBytes.

Ok, I have some time and don’t need to respond on my phone now.

I am talking about my entire Plex folder which also includes my content (movies, music, audiobooks, etc)

I already tried deleting Plex/Library. I used the asustor app manager to remove the plex app, deleted the plex/library folder, then reinstalled the app. It made zero difference. Plex is not accessible on my local internet, nor online (Which it shouldn’t be as it isn’t associated to my account now). When I check the process it is showing as idle with only a few MB in ram usage and No cpu usage.

After the above I decided it would probably be easiest to just completely remove all of plex and do a fresh install of it. That is where my google searches led me to the need to completely move my data out of the plex folder and delete it. I am really hoping that works, because I am not wanting to spend a lot of time fighting with it. I will have all my content moved over… so worst case I just cancel my plex pass and move my content to something like emby (It has much better TV streaming anyways, not that I am even doing that atm).

You have your media in the Plex data folder?

That is a huge no-no. Doing so will cause Plex Media Server instability. There should be messages saying “place no media files here” in several languages (there are on every other NAS platform).

Your media files must be in a separate location. You do not have to delete them. That is a waste of time. Just move them somewhere else.

Example:

/volume1/media
   /movies
   /tv shows
   /etc.

After you relocate your media, you can then re-install Plex Media Server.

Steps:

  1. Relocate media out of the Plex Data Folder
  2. If installed, uninstall Plex Media Server
  3. Delete anything in the Plex Data Folder
  4. Re-install Plex Media Server
  5. Claim the server.

I have already got it back up and running. Just closed out of other things that were eating disk seek time.

For some reason when I created it… it added folders for Movies/TV shows into the Directory… then again it has been there for ages.

I already had music/audiobooks in different locations, but now I don’t have anything inside the plex area. I just link to them instead.

Again though, I am back up and running. Just wish I knew what about that update broke things. Using the asustor version it has me on Version 4.123.2. I have a feeling that is a little outdated, so I guess I should do the upgrade again before I get too far along.

Thank you for the help!

Edit Updated and working.
