Audio issues- No Sound

I’m having trouble getting my audio working for all my files. It seems that I am able to hear any of my content that is in “stereo” format. I’m running HDMI to my Mac mini to my receiver. Plex settings are as follows.
Device Type: HDMI
Channels: 5.1
Device: HDMI
Normalize- Yes
Exclusive- No
Dolby Digital AC3- Yes
DTS- Yes

I have isolated this to Plex Media Player as all content using the Plex web interface and outside of PMP work just fine. My receiver will switch to DTS/DD when playing back content in the app but through the web interface everything is processed as PCM. I have tried just about all combinations of settings within PMP and have not been able to get any audio other than from content that is DTS or DD. I’m sure I’ve got other file formats but below are a few that are giving me issues.

AAC Stereo- No audio
MP3 Stereo- No audio
AAC 5.1- No audio
DTS 5.1- Good
AC3 5.1- Good

Any suggestions as to what I need to setup to have my surround content be processed as such and for any stereo content to either be sent to my receiver as such. I’ve checked my .conf file and can’t seem to see anything off there.

Try setting the device type to ‘Optical’ instead of ‘HDMI’

Try using ‘Exclusive Mode’

I’ve tried using optical and exclusive mode and still no luck with “stereo” content.

Ok, so done some more testing of this. I came up with 5 (I’m sure there are more scattered in the library) different audio codecs of media in my library. I went through all my settings and came up with the following chart. It seems that using Optical gives me all but my “stereo” content. Any suggestions? I know I was able to once hear this stereo content but it seems something has changed and I’m just trying to get it back to 100% again.

I can only assume that your AVR doesn’t understand the format which comes from PMP when it plays stereo content.
Which would be PCM. Every AVR should normally support that, so I’m a bit confused.

Different idea: Have you ever pressed + on your keyboard while playing stereo music? Try it, repeatedly.

That is what I’m starting to think. When any of the surround sound content comes in my receiver flashes DTS up and when the other content is coming through it flashes PCM and the sample/bit rate so it should be outputting audio. More investigating tomorrow. I will report back. Thanks for the additional tips. I’m used to having more detailed options to set rates and conversions with work. Sometimes the consumer level stuff hides a lot of this “back end” as to not confuse the general populous.

Now I’m even more confused… When I playback content via the web interface my receiver detects PCM 3/4.1 48k and I hear audio. When I use PMP with the two stereo files I also see the same PCM 3/4.1 48k however I get no audio. All the true 5.1 files I either show Dolby Digital 3/2.1 or DTS 3/2.1. I find it strange that my receiver sees the same signal from PMP as it does with the web but doesn’t get signal from one of them. Also any other program will output the PCM 3/4.1 48k and audio works just fine.

I’m using PMP 2.6.0.803 on a Mac mini using the HDMI output to a Sony STR-DN1050 receiver.
I also hooked up my MacBook Pro with an HDMI output with the same HDMI cable also running PMP 2.6.0.803 and everything worked perfectly. Receiver showed all the same signals except this time I actually heard audio from the two stereo files. Checked settings and they are the same between the two computers.

Have you tried the + key?
Do also switch to the windowed mode and look for the volume fader. Make sure it is in the right-end position.

Yup, tried that. In a last effort to figure it out I deleted my PMP preference.plist file with no affect. Then I deleted the whole PMP folder under application support as well as the app itself. After downloading the software again and logging back into a fresh version the audio all seems to be working. There must have been a corrupt preference or saved setting somewhere in the app support files that was causing the issue.
Thanks Otto for the troubleshooting.

I know this is an old thread but I had similar issues with only aac sound not working via my amp after a PMP HTPC rebuild to w10. Other codecs worked fine.

However I tried the + button and it worked! I thought that was just the general volume control so can’t fathom why other audio tracks worked fine but either way I am happy to have fixed the problem and thanks for the suggestion

If the + key worked, it means that AAC audio was decoded by PMP and then sent to the amp as PCM.
Whereas all streams in other formats were sent as they were (bitstreamed) and it was then up to the amp to decode them.
