For me this feature is not working after May update and Client update (5.15.1). I’ve enabled audio-passthrough feature, but Plex is still transcoding DTS into AAC. My AV receiver is compatible with DTS.
Just installed the May update and enabled passthrough on the Series X (rebooted), confirmed public release v2.72.1 referenced by @Moussa above is installed but passthrough doesn’t seem to be working. TrueHD still shows as being transcoded, receiver supports TrueHD and works fine from ShieldTV with the same media file using TrueHD. Any suggestions?
**Update - got everything working, uninstalled the plex client turned passthrough off, rebooted. Turned passthrough back on, rebooted, installed plex client and direct play for TrueHD and other formats all working fine.
I’ve got both updates and have enabled audio pass through in my Xbox series s settings. However nothing will Direct Play on any of my blu-ray mkv files or do audio passthrough. It says the following:
Reasons: Cannot direct play with protocol: http, codec: dca. Reason: Audio Passthrough is not available for dca
Also says the same for TRUEHD files and Direct stream as well.
Anyone found a solution? This seems to be more of a software issue than hardware as the Xbox is more powerful than the shield, Roku Apple TV etc.
As noted in the top post, direct stream pass through is not supported.
From the info you provided, something in your audio chain is not supporting dts.
You need an avr or sound bar with truehd/dts support, connected with hdmi 2+ cable.
Further complicating things, are some hdmi 2.1 compatibility issues between series x and some avr’s (check google if you think this might apply to you).
Oh ok thanks for the info. Yeah my soundbar supports DTS/TrueHD at 5.1. My Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra play the same files via Direct Play with no transcoding so my setup doesn’t seem to be the issue, although I could be wrong.
If I take the same file and switch the DTS or TrueHD track to EAC3 within the Plex app on the Xbox, it direct plays video and audio just fine.
So to me it seems audio passthrough is not working and the xbox is still handling the audio before passing it to the soundbar/TV.
I had the same issue, check my post above, have you tried that?
@GroovySon - glad to hear you have everything working! Were you able to try DTS files? As noted above, both myself and @csutcliff got other formats to work except DTS.
DTS should work fine for me - my XBox connects directly to my receiver via HDMI and the receiver supports DTS. When I play a DTS file in Plex, the guide shows it as a passthrough file. Unfortunately, I get no sound at all.
Thanks!
@Plexatron tried two different DTS files and both worked fine. I’ll test it out over the next few days and report back any issues.
I have found that sometimes the settings don’t seem to take on the xbox and need to be turned off and a reboot before trying again.
Thanks for the tip @GroovySon After many reboots and reinstalling and configuring a few settings, I’m able to direct play those same files now.
However, like @Plexatron I now get no sound at all with the DTS or TrueHD files. Although everything is showing as direct playing (truehd and dts). I get sound in the menu when scrolling and clicking but nothing coming from Plex.
My audio settings in the Xbox Series S are:
Bitstream out
Format: DTS digital surround
Audio Passthrough: enabled
So close to having this replace multiple devices if only these last few issues are ironed out
I had to disable bitstream out and switch to 7.1 to get it to work. After a few reboots I was able to get all options working, BUT 7.1 always works best. I get audio stuttering when using bitstream out (when it works). Have you tried the other audio options?
I use uncompressed 5.1, that shouldn’t make a difference on passthrough , should it?
I don’t think so. 7.1 was the first that I got working, but 5.1 should work too compared to bitstream out. I don’t know why bitstream out didn’t work for me, but it didn’t at first. Now it does with some glitches so I’ve found 7.1 is best.
I tried 5.1 uncompressed and 7.1 but still couldn’t get audio from Plex with DTS and TrueHD content. However navigating the UI still made sounds as before.
I can’t check other streaming services as I don’t subscribe to any but my kids are playing games at the moment with DTS audio working on those with no issues.
Hopefully someone can find a solution soon. And wouldn’t enabling audio passthrough bypass the HDMI audio settings? That’s what I thought would happen but doesn’t seem to be the case.
Thanks for the tips. I tried changing the audio setting from Bitstream as well, but no luck. Also tried restarting the console several times.
What’s funny is anything Dolby (including TrueHD) works for me. DTS-HD MA also works. It’s just DTS-HD that doesn’t work. It shows as being passed through on the XBox, but no sound. The receiver doesn’t show any incoming audio.
Hoping the issues get ironed out; if this works, it’ll make XBox on the same level as the Shield for capability.
Those of you having problems, try installing the Dolby atmos, and dts unlimited apps, just to make sure those apps can send to your equipment.
Thanks @TeknoJunky - I can confirm I have both apps installed.
I have both installed and both work fine. It’s only plex that has a problem with DTS. A DTS bluray works fine with passthrough for example.
Ok well if you (or anyone) thinks they have exhausted self trouble shooting steps, enable logging to server (verbose only), reproduce the sound issues, and post the logs (probably best to start a new dedicated thread, with your exact system setup, Xbox model, tv/avr models, and anything else relevant).
You may also want to try Blu-ray disks with both truehd and dts hd, because if those won’t pass through you have issues outside of plex.
Is there a way to disable just DTS audio? LG CX will not passthrough DTS through eARC (not DTS capable), and I would rather not disable passthrough in the Xbox settings everytime I watch a file with DTS audio.
I can’t connect xbox → AVR → LG CX because the AVR is not HDMI 2.1 compatible, so I would lose VRR and 4K 120hz.
@TeknoJunky are you having any issues with audio Passthrough and Plex? Starting to think my somewhat outdated sound bar and Samsung TV setup may be the true culprit in getting no sound through the Xbox series s.
