Funny, I’ve got a similar problem but with DTS.
I have a similar setup to you except with a series x. The first image below shows Atmos TrueHD and it works great. However, any regular DTS I try to play with pass through, I get no audio and a similar error message to you (see 2nd image). However, audio works perfectly fine with DTS-HD.

Look at your server dash, the audio is probably being transcoded.
Pass through does not work when the file is being transcoded (audio or video).
So you need to determine why the transcoding is happening.
Either your system doesn’t direct play dts, or maybe subtitles being burned, or some other issue or bug.

I’m wondering where this feature stands. The discussion seems to have died down so I’m wondering if that means the issues have all been ironed out or if people have given up on it. I just found out about this option and plan on trying it as soon as possible but it requires moving stuff around so before I bother, I wanted to check and see where things stand.
A few days ago passthrough was working beautifully on my Xbox One X and my Pioneer Surround system. With the most recent update, the passthrough option has disappear from the Audio options menu and all passthrough has stopped, even elementary DTS and AC3 passthrough. Furthermore, video streams that have DTS-HD or Dolby True-HD refuse to play at all and just spin forever. The same streams have no problem on my PS4 Pro, however they get transcoded into PCM. I have checked and confirmed the passthrough option is still selected in Xbox options.
Has anyone else seen the same problem?
Tried sharing some media remotely to someone using that kind if setup. He had same problem, didn’t work

Passthrough worked for me in the past. I checked recently to see if any Xbox or Plex app updates broke my set up. I just tried Plex and TrueHD passthrough on a few movies and it still works.

Passthrough was rock solid for me up until the recent update. Now it is very unreliable - even lossy tracks are failing to play consistently and usually require restarts to get through the movie. I had a two week period where DTS soundtracks wouldn’t play at all.
My receiver is still indicating the correct formats so when it works, it’s fine but these issues are extremely annoying, seeing how everything WAS flawless. It’s also gotten to be very easy to crash my Plex server and require a full reboot on it - rewinding one minute will do it every time, even on SDR material.
