Audio synch during commercials LIVE tv

I record The Late Show/Colbert Standard DVR settings. Sometimes I try to watch it live while recording. I have commercial detect/skip unselected/off (thought that might be cause, but no)

Usually it’s during commercials, but unpredictable, the audio will continue normally, but the video shifts into slow-motion, and half the speed of the video. At the end of the commercial break, the picture will be a full minute or more behind the sound. WTF??

The program appears to continue to record normally, I can FF through the break and usually get picture/sound hooked up again, eventually. But during the next commercial break it goes bye bye again.

I’ve fiddled with every setting I could imagine is relevant. I am at a loss.

Not sure if related to your issue but Im getting major a/v sync issues when skipping through commercials.

Workaround is to skip back once and the sound goes back into sync. This is on Shield/Android TV with recordings from DVB-T 1080i DD 5.1 / 2.0. a real pain.

Thank you. I can always “correct” the problem Backing up usually works – however backing up 2 seconds often sends me 10 minutes or more back in the program – sometimes back to the LAST commercial break I spent 5 minutes getting through.

Is the channel HD? I’ve had audio synch issues with some recordings from HD channels, but thought it was due to my post-processing script (I don’t often play while they’re recording).

It seems that the frame rate varies during the recording (possibly changes between the actual show and the commercials) and this can throw the audio synch off.

skipping back should depend on how many times you press the back button i.e. once = 10 seconds - twice = 30 etc but I can only comment on the Shield.

I think its a simple issue with the way Plex re-syncs x264 MPEG4 1080i video and audio perhaps it needs to do more sync checks idk.

Shouldn’t be an issue with frame rates/video resolutions changing. Broadcast TV at least DVB-T in Australia convert all broadcast content into 1080i Dolby Digital 2.0/5/1 for HD and 576/720 for SD and that doesn’t change per show or commercial breaks.

Would be nice if one of the Plex employees picked this up as I suspect everyone is having this annoying issue.

My issue occurs with broadcast HD TV. As I recall, it’s less of a problem when watching recorded shows. (at least it’s easier to fix) So that’s what we generally do.

I don’t have an all-encompassing understanding of how this all works. I don’t know of Plex is trans-coding while recording, but doing that plus serving a live stream seems like it may be a lot of plates to juggle… But processor overload doesn’t seem to explain this problem. Video goes to slow motion, audio is off to the races. That baffles me.

Have an different issue with Sling, too, which could easily be caused by this. (but that’s not for this forum)
