I finally sorted out Video direct streaming, but I still have problems getting Audio to direct stream. I am almost positive its a setting in the TV or Roku that I am messing up.
For comparison I am playing the same file, one on my old 720P Plasma getting signal from a Gen2 Fire TV box. As you can see despite the old TV and TV speakers the FireTV seems to have no problem doing the video and audio down conversion to Stereo and 720P, freeing up the server to do essentially nothing.
My main setup has a much newer Vizio D65x-G4 4K 65" TV and a 4661 Roku Ultra. The Roku is connected via HDMI, then I use the TV’s old Optical out to go to a Vizio 2.1 soundbar with no decoding capability of its own. It seems like I have some sort of setting mix that makes the server do the audio downconversion to stereo when I feel either the Roku or TV should be able to handle it. The Roku has options for Audio Mode (Stereo or Auto) and HDMI (Auto, PCM-Stereo, DD, DDP, DD-DTS). The TV has options for the Optical audio out of (Auto, PCM, Dolby D or Bitstream). I’ve tried a few combinations and all seem to still require the server to decode down to AAC Stereo.
Any suggestions?
