Auto Play on LG Smart TV

Hi!

I just bought a LG Smart TV and the built in Medialink is really neat. Only thing is that using the TV to navigate to the movie I want to see takes a little to much effort.

In the Netflix app for iOS and Android - when I choose to play a movie I get to pick which unit to play it on, in the app itself or on my LG Smart TV.

I would absolutely love if the same thing could be added to the Plex Apps, but thanks anyway for a great product!

LG write the Medialink app for their TV's.

There would be no need to interface with Medialink. I think what OP is getting at is that it would be great to browse to the desired video on the iOS device and then be able to choose the LG Smart TV as an 'output to' device (exacly how airplay currently works).

Examples of apps that already do this on iOS and with LG Smart TV are Netflix? (have not used), Skifta (have used and tested).

Skifta can browse a DLNA source and then select the LG TV as an output device, so effectively the OP can achieve what they want already, however the Skifta interface is really ugly,

Which requires development of the LG client by LG to enable it to be a "target" - the IOS app can already do this with Plex clients that support it.

I would not hold your breath for any major updates to the Plex client on LG, have never seen one yet and my TV is a 2011 model.

Sorry I think I am confused. I do not understand why you think the tv needs to run the Medialink software.

The LG smart TV's are DLNA Renderers (DMR). Just turning the TV on is enough to start this service.

The Plex Media Server is currently a Digital Media Server (DMS) allowing it to host media using DLNA.

The feature that is requested here is to make Plex Server (or the mobile client) a Digital Media Controller (DMC), thus allowing the controller to push the media to the renderer from the server (in this case the LG TV), however I believe it will also work with some network amps.

By contrast MediaLink is a Digital Media Player (DMP) ie it can browse for a file and play it.

This process has been proven. You can use 'Skifta' to browse media on a Plex server and push it through to the TV. For clarity the TV does not need to be running Medialink or any other software, it just needs to be 'On'.

The reason this would be a nice feature for Plex is that they do an amazing job at the UI (where as Skifta is lousy).

I would love to be able to use Plex on my iPad to start a movie running on my TV.

I believe that doing what you suggest is entirely possible, if Plex were to treat the TV as a DNLA Client.
That means that you would probably lose all the benefits of MediaLink (resume video at last stopped state, etc.)

It would be a nice feature to have.

The iMediashare iOS app is also able to interact with the PMS DNLA server and send the output to the LG DNLA client, it's not too bad but you do loose the metadata and resume features.

ok, but that kinda makes this a duplicate request, voting this way -> http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/47113-plex-as-dlna-control-point/?hl=dlna
