Supported TV Sets

As far as I learned LG and Samsung tv sets can connect directly to a remote Plex media server. Are there any other manufacturers that support Plex too?

Currently I’m looking for a new tv set and up to know only one LG (55LEX8) and one Samsung (UE55D8090) are on my list. Any other recommendations?

I'd be very careful buying a TV based on Plex support. I got the LG smart TV upgrader last weekend thinking like that, and I ended up returning it within 3 hours. When I upgraded to the latest firmware and got it running, everything looked awesome (like plex does). but not a single one of my 600+ movies would play. I tried mp4s, mkvs, avis, and got the same error with each. Maybe it'll improve. But I'd be hesitant to base my purchase on that hope.

To answer your question, I think any LG that has the dashboard/smart features should work. The medialink isn't an app and it's a little hard to find. Like i said I had to upgrade firmware to find it. But it's an extension of the network video, pictures, music menu in the dashboard.

Thanks for your answer - even though it’s not really encouraging

I’d really like to minimize the equipment needed to “just” watch a movie, i.e. there should be a source (NAS) and a display (TV) - nothing else.

So it looks like I have to get deeper into this topic and find out what are the limitations on the supported formats on the

TV side…

Wonder if there other members around that could post some field reports on the interaction and limitations of PMS and TV sets.

I would recommend an AppleTV2 as a Plex Client. It has a very tiny footprint in your Entertainment cabinet and for me, works flawlessly. Only need a TV with HDMI then :)

D'oh  - this option didn't even came to my mind... So the Plex app that is running on my iPhone would be the same one to be installed on the AppleTV?

I have seen that the Apple TV 2 only supports up to 720p, just keep in mind.

I think the ST600 is not a good example. It is a very unfortunate device and LG should stop selling it. The Medialink on it doesn't seem to be related to the MediaLink on their TV's. For one thing it is actually quite the feat that the ST600 programmers have done. They have managed to produce a media player which plays no video ( via Plex). It's a new low in the media player world.

The TV's are a different matter. They seem to work. Mind you, Smart TV's are no exactly taking the world by storm. Apart from Plex most of the apps are just plain silly.

I have two of them and some 1080p media players. The Apple TV2 would get my vote, especially if one has any iDevices. It's only a matter of time before 1080p will make sense in the iDevice world and at that point the ATV will support it ( with a new box of course). The point is to get into a path that has a future.

Yes, but with one qualification. You need to jailbreak the ATV2 to install the app since there are no apps for the ATV at this time. Apart from that Plex has worked great on our ATV's and iDevices. Don't forget that the Plex app on your iPhone supports AirPlay to the ATV.

I just purchased an ATV2 for just this thing. I’m excited to see how it’s going to work. I’ve also hear very good things about the samsung bluray players with Smart Hub. This wasn’t the best option for me, since I rip all of my blurays anyway. But I hear it works very well.

You could use an jailbroken ipad2 with the HDMI dongle. Install “displayout” from Cydia.

And then install XBMC with the plexbmc addon. The ipad2 plays 1080p without a sweat. Even the 42mbit birds scene worked without dropping a single frame.

How would you control the iPad? Does the Apple Remote app allow you to contra it from an iPhone?
