I’m aware auto-tagging in photos is a feature of the Plex Pass, but can Plex auto-tag family members just like what happens automatically in iCloud and Google Photos? (not just tags for places, scenery, and textures etc) So I can search for family members by name in the search bar? Or do I need to manually add tags for names of family members to each individual photo?
Face identification is not possible in Plex at the moment.
What about geo-tagging? So I can search for
photos that were taken at certain locations?
If there are place names asscociated with photos, you can use the regular plex search and type in this place name.
There is also a filter available in the photo library
Thanks - but I’m not seeing place names or locations when I’m viewing/editing photos - which I can confirm does contain geo-data. Is this a feature of Plex Pass only? Is this why I’m also not seeing “Places” as a filter, as per your screenshot?
Location lookup is indeed a Plex Pass-only feature.
And does location lookup only apply to photos? What about home videos in the photo library as well?
I don’t think that this geo-lookup is done on videos.
Ok, and are you able to edit location after it’s been auto-tagged (just in case you want to name it a particular place name or something different)?
No, that is not possible.
Just one more thing, does Camera Upload in the Plex app on iOS automatically upload photos AND videos from the camera roll?
Just to clarify here, geotagging does work with both photos and videos inside Photo libraries providing they have the required embedded metadata. Photo and Video from iOS and Android devices should all be supported.

Is face recognition (auto-tagging) a possible feature in the near future?
According to Imagga’s API documentation (Plex’s third-party auto-tagging service provider) they support face recognition ability. This is a notable point of difference that exists between Plex as membership-based media server agent as apposed to that which is already offered for free by Google Photos and iCloud Photos etc.
