Is this ever going to be implemented? It was supposed to be added a few OS updates ago. Apps like Funimation and Disney+ will turn CC on for forced subs regardless of what the Roku CC setting is set at.
Kind of annoying to still have to remember to flip it on in Plex for foreign audio scenes.
It should work. It’s not limited to forced subtitles though. If your captions mode is set to OFF, then the player will turn them ON if any subtitles are selected from within Plex. We will not modify the captions mode if it’s set to anything other than OFF (e.g. Instant Replay, On Mute).
If this is not working. Please enable remote logging, and play a video with subtitles. Report back with the time/timezone and username used after you ran this test.
Oh, just read your post that you don’t modify the setting if it’s set to instant replay. I don’t really understand the logic of that. There’s 2 CC settings that won’t display foreign language subtitles when selected, and you’re omitting half of them. Plus if someone is watching something that only has a sub file for foreign language sections, they aren’t going to be confused when they hit the instant replay button and no subs appear since the sub file doesn’t have subs for the whole movie. Setting it to ON all the time when a sub file is selected seems like a better solution than only when the CC setting is “off”.
I don’t know if something like Disney+ has special privileges, but it displays foreign language subs regardless of what the CC system setting is set at. It actually doesn’t even change the toggle when you hit *.
We thought about that, however, that would mean you’d have to toggle that setting every time you played something if you only wanted subtitles during instant replay, or on mute (for Roku TVs).
With that said, there may still be room for improvement here, as you mentioned, who’d really want Instant Replay mode for forced subs.
Yeah, something is special there. I have asked Roku a few times about their “Forced narrative subtitle” option, that has only been mentioned in their release notes back in 9.2 OS release. I still have yet to receive a response.
