AutoUpdater failed (30006) - Manual Installation for the last 2 years now

Hello,
In the last 2 years I encountered a problem with the built-in Update function of Plex Media Server [Windows 10] that I just lived with until today. After clicking “Download” [PMS: Settings > Server > General], PMS is downloading the file and giving me the option of Installing after it has reached 100%, as it is supposed to do, I think [because it had never worked]. So far so good. But when i click on “Install”, after about half a second it says: “something went wrong, please install manually”. That is exactly what i have been doing for the last 2 years now. (Installing it manually then). I have tried multiple sulotions offered here in this forum, but I couldnt resolve it so far.

Beside that Update error, Plex is working Great! <3 o:) <3

What i think is the cause of the Problem:

I moved the Plex Folder and Appdata to another Drive [C: to D:]. But left the Plextemp on C:

  • D:\Plex\Plex Media Server = LocalAppDAta
  • D:\Plex\Plex Media Server.exe = Directory of Program
  • C:\Plextemp = Transcoder Temp Directory

What i have done:

  • On drive D: check the chmod of the files&folders. Check the owner rights of the Folders according to Manfred73
  • Using the Microsoft Fix It tool Plex Support Article
  • Manual Installation. (Several times so far. Never solved the Update Problem)
  • Check the registry according to sa2000
  • Change back to C:\Users\Server\AppData\Local by using a SymbolicLink pointing from C:\Users\Server\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\ to D:\Plex\Plex Media Server\ (and doublechecked in registry if LocalAppDataPath is correct)

What I couldn’t do so far

  • I found this article for a mac, but it is for a mac. The description of the Problem is similar to my problem. I only found the Butler Update Service in the registry but don’t know what what options i have to change it/disable it. Can’t update, “check for updates” is greyed out?

Is there anything else I can do? I would really appreciate some help on my problem. I would love to update the PMS from my AppleTV and/or from the Built-In Update Function.

Thank you for taking your time to resolve my problem.

Best regards,
Christoph

Maybe, today a PLEXpert can solve my Problem?
If you’re not an PLEXpert but have any suggestions feel free! I’m kind of bogged down so I appreciate some external opinions. Let’s work on it.

I don’t know if there are rules for pushing Threads up.
I couldn’t find such, but I’m sorry if there is one and I violate it.

Another try!

I hope that this time someone with knowledge or a creative mind may help me out!

Best regards.

I have the same issue. I thought it was just me. Couple of years sounds right.

There are more Members who confirm that they experience the same Problems.

Still the same, update not working.

Would be Glad to hear some advises. Or at least a suggestion whom I may contact to resolve our Problem.

Greetings.

Still the same Problem.

Help is highly appreciated!

Does the update even start or does it fail before starting the update? If the update starts, is there a log file? Since it is an MSI installation, the default location for the log might be %temp%.

So a month or so ago, i updated plex manually as usual. With the latest release, I was able to determine an update was available and download / install it!!! First time I’ve been able to do this in years!

No, it doesn’t start the installation Process. What I think is happening, is that the Updater is downloading the file, but then doesn’t find the file to execute it (Just my idea, not based on log files or similar).
I had a look inside the Temp directory, but there is no sign of a suitable log file just a bunch of other stuff  .

Thank you for that input, I performed a manual installation.
Furthermore I made an additional Symlink (C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex <===> D:\Plex) as i read, that someone had a Problem after moving the installation Folder to another drive.
After I downloaded and installed Version 1.13.3.5223 manual to C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex everything works as before. (Installation Folder still on D:\Plex, just used the Symlink to fiure out, whether there is an internal Problem in the Plex Software)
Now we have to wait for another update to figure out if its working now.

Thanks for your help so far, I come back when I have some more information to share!

unfortunately It is not working tried several things again.

But its still not working. :expressionless:

Well, I’m happy for every input.

Hello
:star_struck::partying_face:I am back with good news - I was able to fix my Problem.:star_struck::partying_face:

After another year of frustrating manual installation of Plex, i was trying to find a solution again. I stumbled about a Post of @sa2000 (His Post)

What was especially helping me was, that i didnt knew of HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
I was just only familiar with following Location (that i was changing but didn’t resolve my Problem)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

So I just made sure that both are pointing to my ../../Plex Media Server Directory. (Which in my case pointed to different locations. One pointed to somewhere on C:\ and the other one to E:\

After the change i tried the auto update function again and it worked - for the first time in about 3 years.

TL;DR: E.g. In case your Plex Media Server looks like:

E:\Plex\Plex Media Server\Cache
E:\Plex\Plex Media Server\Codecs
E:\Plex\Plex Media Server\Crash Reports
...

Make sure to put the following value

E:\Plex\

into both registry keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

A BIG thankyou to you @sa2000 you finally (not intended in first place) fixed my Porblem and the one of many others
