Bad quality when streaming remote

I recently got PLS set up on my home PC. I mainly use it with my apple TV’s to access and play content on my home PC. When playing media on my apple TV’s everything works great, and they play movies/tv shows in HD quality with no issue.

The issue I am having is playing my content when I am away from home(remote). On my iPad while remote on cellular, I can see all my content through the app, but when I play anything, the resolution is bad. I have tried changing the settings in the app so that cellular streaming is not limited, but nothing has changed.

Some details about my home network…I have a fiber ISP and for routers I am using 2 Google Wifi hubs. The main Hub is in my living room, and the second one is in my office where I have my PC directly connected via Ethernet to the hub. On my PC my download speeds are anywhere from 135 mbps to 170 mbps.

I am a new user and I hope I have given a good amount of details, but if I need to provide any other details for someone to better help me, please let me know! Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you may also need to check server setting for remote streaming. I have a feeling it’s set at 2Mbps by default.

Remote streaming is enabled in PMS. I can access my entire library remotely on cellular, but the quality is not HD like it is when I’m at home. When I am on my home network on my ipad, even through the app it plays everything normally in HD. So It is just scaling the quality down when I am not at home on wifi.

Yeah streaming may be enabled but I thought there was a bandwidth setting on the server itself for remote streams.
Sorry on mobile at the moment so can’t check.

Hmm I don’t see a setting for that on the server itself.

Have you check if your connection is Direct or Indirect? Plex has some problem with their last PMS releases, the remote access will stop working.

It looks like remote access is enabled, but I am not using port forwarding.

Did you set a Internet upload speed?

Limitations

When relaying a connection through us, there are limitations for the streaming qualities you can use:

  • Free users are limited to 1 Mbps maximum for streams
  • Plex Pass subscribers are limited to 2 Mbps maximum for streams

If the content you’re trying to stream has a higher bitrate, then your Plex Media Server will need to transcode the content down to fit the limitation.

You also need to check the quality within the iOS app. Under Settings --> Quality, there are options for Home Streaming, Remote Streaming, and Limit Cellular Data. If you’re on cellular, the Limit Cellular Data value will affect the quality, and if you’re on WiFi, but not at home, then the Remote Streaming value is what will be used.
