Basic question: What the hell is Plex?

I saw some comment online that your Roku player is basically incomplete without Plex.  So I loaded Plex on my Roku, and I went to the Plex website and entered the PIN and now, I guess, I have Plex on my Roku.  Now what?  I don't have a clue what this program is supposed to do and I don't see a statement explaining it on the website.   I thought it was going to allow me to stream video from network websites,  but that appears not to be the case.  So now I've got it and don't have a clue what to do with it. 

 

So far I haven't paid for Plex.  I just have the free level of it.  What does paying for it get you?

You have installed a Plex client. Plex is a media server you run on a computer to share and organize your media in one place. Then you connect to it with clients to stream the content.

I’m in the same boat it’s on my mac and I was told it could stream to my client. However the only thing it’s synced is my iTunes music I can’t even access my videos…

You do not need to pay for Plex. Paying to be a PlexPass subscriber gets you access to the leading (bleeding) edge new stuff before it is released to the GP.

Sometimes it is a great thing, sometimes you bleed a little as it could be alpha stage at first.

Not one ■■■■■■■ person asked how to Install plex (which probably shouldn’t need a detailed description, whatever the hell bbn plex is) but your reply is the opposite of useless… like literally, not helped one single person. And probably confused more people… how about not speak if you do not know what plex is.

plex is a 2 part system which lets you watch YOUR media locally or remotely.

  • plex media server is what runs on your PC or other server device, which indexes YOUR already ripped videos/music and which lets you stream from your server to a plex client

  • plex client is a program which runs on many different devices (mobiles/tablets/tvs/streaming sticks/PC’s/etc) which connects to a plex server (either yours, or if you have a friend with a plex server that has invited you).

  • plex does have some functions which work without a dedicated server, like web shows, news, podcasts.

  • plex is NOT netflix. It does not download any content for you or let you stream ‘free movies/tv/music’ from some random place on the internet.
