Best option for Remote Access?

Hi. I’m relatively new to plex, so I’m not sure where to best ask this question. I’ve been looking into how to best configure remote access to my plex server (Synology Nas), which will mostly be accessed from my android phone but occasionally a windows machine.

I normally use a 3rd-party VPN and am not looking to redirect all my traffic through the Nas or my own VPN server. I only want to connect for remote access purposes (plex, nzb stuff, etc.):

  1. classic remote access via port forwarding. This seems insecure, but I wouldn’t have to switch VPNs when accessing. Plex access would be read-only anyway, so I’m not concerned about ransomware, but still seems insecure

  2. a VPN server on the Synology

  3. a VPN on my router (dream machine) that would assign local IPs on a separate, isolated vlan. The vlan would be firewalled off from the network outside of things like plex, sabnzbd, certain smart devices, etc.

I’m not concerned about the setup time, but I want to make the access itself hassle-free as possible. So switching from a 3rd-party vpn to my vpn server (and losing internet access), when I want to remote in seems annoying to me.

Any advice on which route is best or any options I haven’t considered? Thanks.
