Not the smartest question but I'll try... Plex, Synology DSM and VPN

Hello everyone,

I run Plex server on a virtual DSM on a Synology NAS DS918+. The virtual DSM is hidden behind a NordVPN VPN, not the host which is accessible from outside.

Everything runs great on LAN except that, of course, I don’t have remote access to PLEX as DSM has a NordVPN connection activated 24/7.

To be precise, DSM host has an aggregation of the 2 links (Link 1 + Link 2 = Bond).

The only thing I would see would be to remove the bond and assign link 1 to one kind of traffic and link 2 to VPN but I’m really not sure about this.

Router is a pfSense 2.7.2 where NAT has been created translating ports to PLEX (32400).

I was wondering if someone has the same kind of setup and made it work.
If someone has the solution, I’ll take it !

Thanks for your time and have a great day!

I would probably look into using Tailscale.
google or duck: tailscale synology and plex

I’m using pfSense+ 24.11.

I use NAT port forwarding rules to forward the WAN port to internal 32400.

I would not break the DSM network adapter bond.
PMS works best when there is only one network adapter.
It is often confused when multiple adapters are involved.

( I have two adapters on my PMS machine which are aggregated. It works without issue in this configuration )

There is no VPN in my configuration. PMS uses HTTPS. All traffic is encrypted in that HTTPS connection.

Thank you for your answer I’ll check it out.

Hello and thank you for your answer.

I created in pfSense an OpenVPN account accessing the LAN and somehow I can access PMS with it but only with a navigator https://app.plex
The app doesn’t connect for some reason.
It will find the libraries and display them but when I click on something to play I get a “something went wrong - close / retry” window. I am going to check the logs to see where it bugs.
