Does anyone have any recommendations on a set-up for running a VPN 24/7 but that has an exception (split-tunnelling?) for my Plex Server so I can have remote access available?
I’m running the server on my MacBook Pro, my router is an Airport Extreme, and my modem is a Technicolor TC 4350. I’m open to suggestions for VPN services as my current subscription is about to expire.
PIA is a good one as you can exclude applications or Addresses.
What I have done:
a) A non default Browser with a home page as https://app.plex.tv/desktop# For me it’s Chrome.
You can always add Plex also as a ToolBar Bookmark as secondary backup.
b) Always use the Browser to open Plex Server. Very secure.
c) Use Plex For Mac as a on Mac Player if required.
d) Add every Plex app and Chrome as a Split Tunnel Exception. ( This also helps with Geo Restrictions for my home Country) Access to Subscription TV and sites that don’t like VPN to access.
e) Have your Energy Saver Settings, start up automatically after power failure. Your VPN app and Plex as login Items. You can set the VPN app to Auto connect to a server of your choice. If using a Torrent client use one that allows a Kill switch.
f) Set a Scheduled Restart of Server. MacBook Pro, for a time that nothing being used . Example 3am in the morning one day a week.
g) Option: I find this very helpful 3rd Party DNS, PIA it is acceptable. Try this recommendation, I have it set in Modem, iMac and VPN, TV.
I have had this in place for 12 months on a non stop iMac Server without issue, mind you choice your VPN server wisely as some can be less reliable due to excess traffic. I share with a few folks all over the world without many issues that a restart does not resolve.
