Currently a Windows 7 MCE Ceton tuner user. Want to get started with Plex to replace my video watching experience and maybe one day be able to use it for TV, though CableCard options are limited or nill. Right now I have a central media server running Emby. In 4 different rooms I have Xbox 360 devices as media extenders. Any thoughts on the best way to setup PLEX to replace this? I know in general I’m looking at NVidia Shield Pro TV devices but would I basically be putting a plex Windows server on my central media server where all my movies are on and then the Shields would act as what I’m used to as extenders?
You can do it exactly like that. Just download and install it. Get a feeling for it.
Thanks. So I’m going to add this to my server. Two things:
-
Does it modify anything in the movie folder or store everything in a separate DB or elsewhere? I am currently using Emby and don’t want it to get messed up while I consider the transition.
-
I would imagine then after I get my NVidia Shield I install a PLEX client and point it to my PLEX server?
-
It does not modify your content directory.

Correct or you can have Shield be a server or a second server.
You don’t need to point it to a server. Rather you sign it into your Plex account.
Ewww, that’s a deal breaker. I don’t want to have to login to anything in the cloud. I do everything local client/server.
you should be able to run plex server and emby server side by side on the same server.
unfortunately the xbox360 plex clients are deprecated and no longer work (as far as I know).
If you do not need truehd/atmos, you can use roku and/or appletv devices (or fire devices if you are really masochistic).
And while you can use plex offline temporarily, you will still need a plex account to sign in your devices.
