I have about 300 films on Plex and a family I share them with as Users. I’ve gotten into a small issue when I put new films up that I’m interested in seeing, but that others assume is a film I’m recommending (I’m a film critic).
I had been thinking I wanted a way to mark films as ones I’ve seen and recommend over other films that are just there to be seen later, but that I have zero opinion on. However, I see no simple way to pull this off with tags or similar.
The only way I can think of to do it is to create multiple “movie” folders named with descriptive names that suggest what they’re there for, but that also means users will need to look into different areas to see the latest addition and such, which is less than optimal. Is there a better way?
I use a private facebook group with my plex users. If I have a recommendation, I post it there… otherwise everything I add to the server is just new content.
Alternatively, you could create two physical folders on your server:
- /media/movies
- /media/recommended
Configure your standard “Movies” library on Plex to read from both folders. Create a 2nd library, “Recommendations”, and point it only to your “/media/recommended” folder.
I would think both the easiest to find and the easiest to manage would be a custom “Genera” tag. Something like “Recommended” or " 'Recommended" as the apostrophe will make it first in the genera list. Then you can edit the movie(s) and tag them as recommended as you wish.
It is easy to add a tag to a group of movies by selecting them all in the web browser and clicking the pencil icon at the upper right of the screen and choosing “tags.” Any tag you add that way gets added to all selected movies.
I don’t personally bother with tags because they’re a pain to use in all of the apps. The libraries are front and center, with little fuss to access them. I don’t think any of my users would have the patience to use them
It would be a really cool feature though if you could create virtual libraries based on custom tags.
