Better support for our personal Home Videos, please

Plex has a unique purpose for me - sharing my digitized old home videos from the 1990’s (and later, but especially the old ones) with my extended and far flung family. Content that literally cannot be found anywhere else, unlike Plex’s wonderful management of Movies and TV Shows that you can find on a dozen different streaming services and easily rip from blu-rays.

I wish Plex could better manage home videos. Right now, they’re more like “movies” then “videos” - it shows a portrait-style image for the “poster” - could it be 16x9 or 4x3 instead, because of course home videos don’t have posters?

Instead of just showing the year released, could it be more like an individual TV show episode, where you show us the precise release date of the episode? Right now, all I can see is that a video came out in 1992. And then I hit “sort by date released” and it does properly sort things, but you just have to kind of guess on the month and day.

This is something that I think Plex could really shine in; managing personal content that you can’t get anywhere else and you trust to store in the Cloud. I hope Plex might realize their opportunity here, and polish it up a bit. The bits and pieces are already there, it just needs to have them put together!

Thank you for the support - yes, this topic here is very similar to mine, but mine just goes a little further - beyond thumbnails - in stating that I’d like to have more detailed date information visible within a video’s page, like a TV show episode rather than a movie.

Reviving this to say I agree and want even more–the metadata for the videos is clearly geared to commercial videos (studio, producer, writers, etc., rarely have anything to do with home videos!). However, I would LOVE to be able to tag the friends/family members in the videos, especially now that I have been tasked with digitizing my mom’s 9 boxes of old VHS tapes!

You can assign the people in the video as “cast” in their embedded metadata. Plex will use for filtering and display their names along the video.

Like, on the back end? Because it isn’t an option through the UI. And editing the metadata from the backend is a terrible option. It might be a temporary workaround, but this is a feature that needs to exist on the front end.

Yes, I referred to manually editing the embedded metadata of your files.
There’s already a feature suggestion for the editing the cast through the web front-end.

OK, I’m glad the request is there. In the meantime, what do you use to edit it on the back end? I looked through the properties in Windows, but the Cast List wasn’t an option there, either.

On Windows you should be able to use mp3tag (despite the name).
I’m using Subler on Mac.

OK, so mp3tag doesn’t work (only shows music tags), and neither does tigotago, BUT MyMeta (which you can get from the Microsoft store for about $3.49, and it has a free trial) works really well.
I would love for Plex to show the ‘cast’ more easily, but I can search for individual names and that works well. Thanks for leading me in a better direction!

I still want this as a front-end Plex feature, though. :stuck_out_tongue:
