Black screen playing MP4s

Up until last week, when I think Chrome updated on 28th March, I could watch all content through my Chrome browser. Since the 28th anything that I watch that’s an MP4 gives me only audio and a black screen. Checking any of the video files through plex gives me this encoding information:

  • Codec HEVC
  • Codec ID hev1

Is this something anyone else is experiencing? Playing through Edge or using the Plex Desktop player works fine.

Any ideas on how I can resolve it? Can I resolve it? Any suggestions most welcome…

Does it say it is directplaying or transcoding etc in Now Playing info?

4.100.1 is the player version. the server version will be in the general section under your servers name

Thanks for the response. I never found the comments you talk about as I resolved the issue shortly after posting. I came across a setting in Chrome called “Use hardware acceleration when available” that was enabled.

I disabled it and things started working again. I don’t know if that points at Chrome or Plex as the issue but there you go, problem solved.

Thanks for the speedy response to me though. Had I not solved it, I’d have worked harder with you.
