Black screen when playing offline content

Server Version#: 4.112.0 on Synology
Player Version#: 9.28.0.3162 (Android)

Hey. So one of my main uses for Plex is to have some episodes to watch for the kid on their tablet when on the car. For this, I download the episodes beforehand.

One big issue though: whenever an episode ends, the next one autoplays but the screen is black and audio plays as usual. This defeats the whole purpose as I have to constantly stop the episode and re-play it for it to work (kid’s shows episodes are like 10 mins or shorter).

This seems to happen with every show I have downloaded and only in offline mode. If I start Plex with the tablet online, even if it goes offline afterwards and only plays downloaded content, everything is perfect. If I start it offline and go to downloads tab, that’s when the issue happens after the first episode plays.

Tried an external player like VLC but seems like autoplay doesn’t work with them enabled so … we’re back to the starting point.

Any tips? Making autoplay work with external players or have downloaded episodes work as they should? Tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite

Thanks!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I was able to reproduce the issue on a tablet.

I have filed the issue to be looked at.

That’s great. Thank you.

Are you still experiencing this issue in the latest version?

Hey, so I’ve just did a quick test after updarting and so far so good. Thanks!

hi. I just downloaded the App on my new Samsung tablet S9+ and I am still having that issue of black screen when next episode starts.
Also, I am not seeing the 10 second countdown I did that is on the iPad app. it immediately jumps to next episode after credits.

Hi morganj. I go back in what I said. Seemed to work after I manually skipped, but if the episode ends it agian back to blackscreen, as the other post states. So, yeah, sadly the issue persists.

Could you please look into it? Thanks.

I’m having the black screen auto play issue as well with the latest PMS playing on an Nvidia shield.

Any update?

Sorry for the delay, I was out for a few weeks. Ok I am unable to reproduce the issue I have tried downloading a season closing the app disabling wifi then opening and playing an episode and let it autoplay the next episode, so far it has successfully played the next few episodes with no black screen. These were the steps I used to reproduce it the first time. Any extra info that could help me reproduce it?

Hi, no worries.
Strange thing is I’ve been toying around with it since then and it’s working fine. So it worked after updating but then failed again for a few days, and it’s been fine again for the last week. It’s strange.
There’s a reddit thread where people are complaining about the same issue though, so something seems to be going on.
Sorry I can’t help on how to reproduce it again though, I’ve been unable to do so.

I’ve not had this specific issue but I thought I could chip in with something I’ve thought might be causing it. The only problem I’ve had with downloaded content occurs when I run out of space when downloading anything. I’ve set a 30GB limit on my phone so if my phone crosses that while downloading the cancelled show fails to play at the show or season level. In the past I’ve adjusted the number of episodes for that show or deleted others. It would still fail to play at the show level but if I drill down to the episodes and hit play it works.

Only the shows that were affected by the out of space issue are affected as I can play everything else at show or season level. To fix this if I delete the show and redo the download while avoiding the out of storage condition (either by deleting something else or allocating more storage). As long as it completes without issue it works.

The other interruption I’ve faced that sometimes affects playback is if there must be a transcoding step before the download and I cancel or go offline before this is done. Sometimes Plex seems stuck in a loop on that one, or will tell me on the phone that it is downloading showing 0% but the drop down in Plex desktop won’t show any activity.

Hope this helps in narrowing down why some issues may be happening.

I’m still experiencing this issue on my Samsung S20 and on Fire Hd 8 tablets. I don’t hit the download limit and it seems to happen more if I have my mobile data and wifi turned off, though not positive on that. I’ve tried letting plex transcode before downloading thinking it was a compatibility issue, but no luck.
Help is appreciated. Thanks
