I have major issues with my dedicated Plex Server machine. I have Blue screen of death (BSOD) crashes, after it updated itself on February 3th, first it started with a BSOD when I rebooted the Plex media server itself was working but didn’t recognize the external SRT subtitles which was downloaded after the update, to fix that problem I read the forum here and solution was to delete LocalAppDataPath in the registry. But in the meantime the server crashed couple times more, not only BSOD but also freezes.
Now it randomly crashes out of nothing, sometimes during playback even without transcoding.
The server is put together with old PC components and it was running perfectly since it was build (3 months)
Here is the information about the computer:
Runs on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
Motherboard: Acer MCP73T-AD v1.2
CPU: lntel Q9550 CORE 2 QUAD
Video card is onboard but it is not used.
RAM: 4GB
Network: 1Gbps NVIDIA nForce Network controller.
2TB Seagate HDD
3TB Toshiba HDD
The rest of the components are not relevant since this computer is dedicated Plex server and it is built to be small as possible sitting in a corner with only network cable attached.
The software installed is minimum on a clean Windows install:
Plex Media Server
NZBGet
Sickrage
CouchPotato
PlexPy
Python
AVG Pro virus scanner
One of the windows informations after a BSOD, it is in Dutch but it speaks for itself I guess:

I don’t know when the next PMS update will be, but this is really frustrating, every time when I come back home or want to check my Plex app on my phone or TV the server is crashed.
You’ll have to get the minidump file and check it to see exactly what’s causing the crash. If you do not run the Plex Server at all, will your computer still crash?
Thanks for replies, the ntoskrnl.exe is causing the crash, most common causes for this crash are memory problems but I don’t get common error with it. This is the address in stack ntoskrnl.exe+eb7a2 I get. Which is not caused by RAM. RAM has another address in stack, like ntoskrnl.exe+6f880 or ntoskrn.exe+75bc0 etc.
@kegobeer-plex, If I close Plex Server I don’t see any crashes, but then again I tested only for 24 hours without Plex server.
@sa2000, I am aware of those websites, since it started after a Plex server update I thought I should ask here first.
Your problem has worsened due most likely to the edits to the registry. When you reloaded software after that you have cause mismatched application DLL versions with operating system DLL files. Somethings got reloaded and some things thought they were already loaded and didn’t overwrite what was there. These types of mismatched are often seen as memory errors because the pointers cross reference data loaded into RAM and the pointers are now pointing to incorrect RAM addresses and BANG! BSOD and big mess. These show as kernel errors because it doesn’t know how to interpret the data it is receiving so it shuts down to protect everything else.
When you deleted the LocalAppDataPath did you delete the key under Plex Media Server or just the path it specified or did you delete the folder it specified in the key field?
Also, your plex database files are probably corrupted from the multiple freezes and hangs and causing more freezes/hangs when playing back media or browsing media in the Plex applications.
You may have to redo the plex install all together and since your registry and install are at odds (it seems) then you need to clean up everything to get back to a good stable space again.
First uninstall all plex related utilities and apps (if they have backups you can create for later imports do them incase you can use them later)
Uninstall PLEX
Restart system
Open registry and check for any remnants under HKCU/software/Plex Inc and remove the Plex Media Server key in its entirety.
“Important” If there was an entry in the registry for this then restart after removal otherwise skip the restart
Go to the OS drive/Program Files (x86)/Plex and make sure Plex Media Server folder has been removed.
If it is all clean then you can do the reinstall.
After this you will need to reinstall all applications that you had to interface with plex
Another lesson learned from my many installation problems is to make sure plex media server is shutdown before installing a new version - I “always” do the manual install and I haven’t had a problem since.
