Hi, I have been having either buffering or application crashes stating “There’s insufficient system memory” when playing high bitrate files (above ~40Mb/s).
Setup:
Hisense U8QF 55’’, latest firmware (K1211), playing through native pre-installed Plex app on TV and Plex DLNA.
1Gbit internet connected via 5GHz wifi, not with ethernet cable because of obvious reasons (100Mbit TV chip limitations).
PC specs does not matter (latest windows, latest drivers etc.), because I’m playing without transcoding (direct play, original video/audio in settings).
Dark S02E03 4k AVC x264, E-AC3-3 .mkv and 43.4Mb/s bitrate (full mediainfo here)
Firstly, when playing both files through DLNA there are buffering issues when more fast paced scenes are on (higher bitrate bandwidth). At first I thought it was internet issues, but here’s a screenshot of network bandwidth, almost reaching 200mbps which would clearly be enough for 59Mb/s bitrate file.
.
Then I tried removing and leaving only 1 audio channel, removing subtitles, still buffering. After that tried remuxing both files to .mp4 format, Interstellar remained with buffering issues, Dark “File format not supported”.
After that, tried playing both files through native Plex app in TV, Interstellar was unwatchable because of low frames, was stuttering, but the strange thing for Dark, the application crashed at about same frame where buffering issues persisted in DLNA with error message “There’s insufficient system memory. The current app will be closed”. Is that something to do with Plex application or Hisense firmware? Also tried remuxing both files into .mp4, now Interstellar was watchable now, but same as Dark, crashed when higher bitrate scenes came on.
Things to note:
Tried remuxing different audio codecs for both files AC3, DTS, DTS XLL, E-AC-3.
Tried different audio channels 5.1, Stereo, 7.1.
Tried removing subtitles and even audio channels.
Tried watching in local Plex, obviously everything was fine.
Tried watching same files on my Android phone, both files played fine without buffering/crashes.
Lower bitrate files plays without buffering/crashes.
There was lower internet bandwidth when playing thought Plex app in TV (from ~200mbps to about ~50-100mbps), any idea why?
Why are the crashes happening in Plex app?
So, basically, for the last few days I’ve been reading almost every forum post regarding buffering and high bitrate files, trying every scenario/fix that I could find. My conclusion, it’s either Hisense U8QF which can’t handle higher bitrate playback or it’s a network issue, or I have left something unchecked. Last case scenario is to get Firestick or any other device, but money is the determining factor. Kind of frustrated after all this, hopefully someone with fresh eyes could check if there are still things to try.
PS. sorry for the wall of text, wanted to list all of the things I’ve tried.
That’s fine, thank you for bringing the post up, haha. It looks like you need to gather more information regarding the issue, as there could be multiple possible scenarios. I don’t know anything about NAS systems, so I’m not best suited to answer. Googling those error messages gave me few results, did you try checking every one of them and trying the solutions? And regarding 5Ghz not working for TV, that’s quite strange, does it work on any other device, does TV connect to 2Ghz wifi (regular)?
The problem is that I do not have that big USB stick to store any large file, but I might try to get one just for troubleshooting. Also, I’m waiting to get my USB-Ethernet adapter to check if that somehow fixes the issue. Will update post.
Thanks for responding, I have already fixed my issue over reddit, all I had to do was add my tvs ip address to the network allowed connections settings in plex.
I have just bought a U7QF TV and am having the exact same issue. I think it is related to how the Plex Vidaa app handles HDR rather than bitrate.
I tried with a much smaller and lower bitrate HDR file and had the same stuttering as we have both had with the high bitrate ones. I also tried playing a 60mbps 4k SDR file and that played perfectly fine through the Plex app.
Also plugging a USB drive in the TV and playing the HDR files was fine.
After all these steps the only variable left is the Plex app so hopefully the Plex devs can sort this out for Vidaa users.
Hi all,. I have the same issues on the 7qft. I have optimized a high bitrate hevc movie, it’s reduced the bitrate a bit and converted to h264 instead. But when I play this through the Plex app it plays for a min and then I get an error saying insufficient system memory and the app closes.
How do we request Plex developers to address this issue? I contacted hisense who suggested, as others have, to try via USB, but I also do not have a large usb drive for this. I know it’s not my network as I can see I have over 600 Mbps connection to TV and 1gig connection to server.
If anyone has had luck or knows how we can get in touch with Plex developers to help address this then please reply.
Not sure if this is any help, but I read on Plex documentation somewhere that the MP4 container is preferred. So I have encoded the file using handbrake (using my old gt760 GPU to make it quicker) to MP4 container with h264 format at peak 60fps highest quality with main encoder setting and aac passthrough on audio. I haven’t watched the whole movie but a quick test of the first few mins looks promising. If anyone has a chance to do the same but maybe experiment a little on the formats then this could help resolve in a way. But it should not come down to us having to encode.
Update: it seems that there have been some updates since my last post and now the MP4 encoded videos are having the issues as before. I tired to play one and a minute into the video Plex crashed saying insufficient memory.
Has anyone seen any improvement or update on the buffering issues? Or even worked out the formats that Plex is prefers?
I had an issue where after watching something, when I tried to watch another movie the error appeared for insufficient memory. I solved that by turning the TV off for a few mins and then back on. When you turn on the TV if you see the vidaa logo then it appears something has cleared compared to no logo.
Tried playing the movie and now it played without the error.
Hello, I’m having the same problem with Plex on a Hisense U7QF. I think that this happens because the buffer of the video fills the RAM memory and it crashes the app.
I’m only able to play videos at 720p with a low bitrate…
It would be nice that the devs could solve this bug.
Hey at last someone else is still having the same issue. I began to think I was alone.
I have tried various different things to get to the issue but it seems as you said to do with the app and TV. It is random and even unplugging the TV for a bit doesn’t fix it so it’s not just a case of clearing RAM.
I also appeal to the development team to look into this with this particular TV in mind to get to the bottom of it, which may also help for other platforms. It may reveal a dormant bug.
Same here with the 55U8QF. Stutters and buffers and can see visual artifacts with some files. Problem seems to be within HEVC containers. When Direct Play is turned off, it will convert to h264 and play fine but visuals are meh.
When I play the same files from the built-in DLNA browser it works perfectly! Even ATMOS and VISION is detected properly, which the built-in app did not.
So… poor implementation of the app. TV itself is fine.
