Buffering issues on Xbox, WTF is going on with this has been an issue for a year 4k HDR and now 1080p

Server Version#: 1.14.0.5470
Player Version#: latest

I dealt months and months of the 4K HDR issue of constant buffering, That still isn;t really fixed, now that I’m on vacation from work trying to watch some normal non 4k movies and getting buffering.

Been dealing with buffering issue one way or another for the last ye of plex and Xbox, Really getting tired of this. Others are reporting the same issues, this is not a server/client/network issue I have got tons of bandwidth and the movies play fine on non Xbox devices

When are these buffering issues finally going to be resolved? It is getting REALLY old. I don’t care whose fault it is fix this ASAP.

Copy pasting my comment from another Xbox thread so this gets replies and attention:

Another Plex Pass user chiming in here, I’ve been having these buffering issues at home on the Xbox One X as well. I originally thought it was an issue with my Plex Media Server, though I’ve tested about 10 different clients (Roku remotely, Amazon Fire TV remotely and locally, LG Plex App locally, Xbox One remotely and locally, Web player local and remotely, iPhone and Android local and remotely) and the only one experiencing this random buffer and crash issue is the Xbox One locally. Turning on transcoding “fixes” the issue, but that defeats the purpose. I’m up-to-date on my Server and my client, tested all my networking connections and Cat6 (did I mention this is wired, not even wireless), and even recently purchased a new router with no improvement.

I work in IT and I’ve tested everything I can think of. I’m glad to see others are having the issue and it’s not isolated to myself, but disappointed that the Plex app on Xbox One was working flawlessly and now is just broken.

I’m also unable to play any HDR files locally without them crashing or the color profiles getting messed up, though that’s less pressing.

Plex Support, if you need any information or testing, I’d be glad to help.

Thanks,
Edward

I also have had to turn off direct play and basically tell it to transcode when even playing locally on the XB1. Def didn’t used to be that way.

It is still an issue with HVEC 4K files.
I am pulling my GD hair out trying to fix this because its absolutely ridiculous that this is the only combo that doesn’t work.

So is this EVER going to be fixed or are we just SOL? Can a dev please chime in here?

SOL, look for new software

So what software for the xbox can offer media library support like plex and allow 4k hdr video streaming for files from my pc? I use hard drives connected to my pc to serve up media to devices in my house.

Id switch if something better came along.

I just want something exactly like plex but actually works with 100% of my media. I’m going heavy on 4k hdr video files now and still finding lots of them buffer on Xbox with plex

Currently trying to watch a H264 movie (17mbps bitrate) mkv and it’s buffering every few mins. Got a nice high end cpu, streams well to laptops and on the web even remotely at original quality but a wired Xbox one gigabit, nice strong cpu, everything as it should be and it still can’t handle it. Bit of a joke for something I’ve been using since it split from XBMC

I have the same issue, and I’ve been beating my head against the wall looking at CPU, GPU, RAM, Disk IO, network and trying various clients. Before even reading your thread, I had identified that the buffering seems to happen around 50-60Mbps+ bitrates.

I can not find a bottleneck in the systems I can control. I was having an issue with IO, but I moved the temp folder for transcoding from a RAID array to an SSD. The issue materializes on both XB1X, my 2018 LG C8 TV and a Sony XBR. The specs on the LG OLED do say that software installed on the TV only supports bitrate up to 50Mbps, but I’m not sure if that limitation comes into play with 3rd party sw like Plex or not. However, this doesn’t explain why the $500 Xbox One X chokes.

I’m running on Linux with sufficient hardware. I’m a tech consultant in my day job, so I have a pretty good grasp of all of the moving pieces involved, and I can only point at the software client at this point. Can anyone from the Plex team please shed some light on this issue? I’m avoiding that type of bitrate for now, because I have spent far more time than I should have trying to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks.

Pretty ridiculous I just struggled through a 1080P movie last night with a 6mbps bandwidth, It would start buffering about every 15 mins. Nothing like this ever happened before. I was able to watch a non HDR 4k movie an hour earlier with a near 50 mbps bandwidth. Then a 4k HDR movie still buffers at 3 mins.

Sick of this random crap, probably has to do with some variation of audio codec or something but gees the Xbox X can handle it.

I wish Plex devs would make fixing the basic feature a priority. I should be able to just hit play and watch something instead of being worried about a random buffering issue cropping up.

Almost 20 thousand views on the other threads and no reply…
The only reason I keep plex at this point is its paid for and to transcode to mobile devices to travel.

Would not even consider recommending it at this point.

No buffering but constant transcoding… Very annoying.
