Hi - I am running PLEX on my Synology 1813+ which is upgraded to 4 GB RAM (the maximum I believe). When I view from within my network, no issues. To view remotely (outside my home network), I am using an Amazon firestick 4K… I do have the video transcoding on and am playing files that are 1080p x265… about 1.5Gb for 90 minutes of video … it freezes alot or doesn’t work at all… why would the transcoding work well when i’m inside my house and not outside my house… Neflix or Prime Video work no problem using the same hardware and internet connection outside my house. Any thoughts?
It depends on your upload speed. American internet is notoriously skimpy on upload speed, typically clocking in at 5 or less Mbps. Since you server has to upload the video content out to the ISP and to wherever you are remotely, you are using your internet’s upload speed.
Try a speedtest, and pay attention to the second set of numbers. A 90m 1080p x265 video at 1.6GB is probably close to 2 or 3 Mbps. Any internet use at home at that time will use up some of that bandwidth, preventing Plex from sending the data any faster. That is also the bare minimum that your internet must use constantly, with no hiccups or drops, just to BARELY stream the video as fast as you are watching it. This would lead to no buffer of video, so it can occasionally fall behind and need to buffer while paused. And if you skip around in the movie, your player will have to ditch all that accumulated buffer and start over.
EDIT: Oh, and that is not to mention that if Plex has to transcode the video, it does not make the video anywhere NEAR compressed to the same size as it was before. It can result in 8 to 20 Mbps video size just for 1080p. Try to reduce the bitrate of the video using the player interface. There is a 720p 2 Mbps speed. Try that out to see if reducing the movie bit rate saves on data rate, allowing no buffering. Increase the quality step by step until you find out what your server is capable of uploading without any buffering.
