BUG: LG-WebOS player not playing content after 3.9.0 WebOS update

Plex Server (QNAP): Version 1.24.1.4931

TV: LG
Model: 65SJ850V-ZA
webOS version: 3.9.0-62708 (dreadlocks2-dudhwa)
Plex Client: 5.23.1
Type of LAN connection: Wired (1Gbit)

Hello.

From recent update of LG TV, I am basically unable to use Plex Client.

It is very sluggish in getting information from server, and attempt to play ends up with “An Unknown error reproducing”.

Any chance of releasing updated Plex Client for LG?Plex Media Server Logs_2021-09-03_19-06-39.zip (1.9 MB)

Attaching logs trying to play Trailer (so, even not my file) for “Pig” movie

Most (including LG) TVs are limited to 100 Mbit connections.

The last update was 15 days ago: Plex for webOS 3.0+ (LG Televisions) - #49 by markus101

Based on the logs the trailer is a 480p H.264 video with AAC audio, which is supported by webOS 3.5 and is working on my webOS 3.5 device. For some unknown reason the media player on your device is failing playback with error code 4, with a message about the codec.

There are some differences between our devices, mine is only 1080p and running a different software version, but a software update from LG shouldn’t have broken one of the most common video/audio combinations like you’re seeing and it’s not possible for us to update the Plex app to avoid those codecs.

At this point there are a few things to try (along with re-testing the app):

  1. Ensure there isn’t a new update
  2. Do a factory reset of the TV

If you’re still experiencing issues, create a sample of a video file that used to play, but no longer does: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

If possible try loading that file on a USB drive and playing it with LG’s Photo & Video app.

If you can reply with the results of these steps as well as providing the sample we can review it further.

Thank you for reply.

I updated both client and server and current numbers are:

Plex Server (QNAP): Version 1.24.2.4973
Plex Client: 5.24.1

I tried TV reset as well.

Unfortunately, problem persists - terrible initial performance and unable to play anything.

Attaching piece of movie which I watched on that same TV before TV upgrade - now it fails to play; it is played w/o problems from USB / LG Photo & Video.

It also have rasterized view of the menu elements, as mentioned in LG WebOS clients suddenly transcode (burn SRT), causing stuttering not seen before.

On all other non-LG clients (Smart TV, Amazon Fire TV stick etc.) all is working as expected.

I had the same issue and couldn’t resolve it. I believe it’s not going to be fixed anytime soon. So here’s what I did instead:
Go to LG’s App Store on the TV.
Download XPlay - it’s just another app that will connect to your Plex media server as normal.
It’s free for 5 days but only costs USD10 for a licence. Cheap. Easy. Quick.
If and/or when Plex updates its TV app you can switch back, but in the meantime you can still access your shows as normal.
I hope that helps.
Cheers

Summary

Hello.

Thank you for suggestion.

I tried application, but w/o success - it shows movies, but can’t play any, like original Plex application.
Log is full of similar messages:

ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 28

ERROR - Unable to find client profile for device; platform=HTML%20TV%20App, platformVersion=3.9.0, device=SmartTV, model=

If it helps, from all available addresses to reach server, from this application only last on the list is working; none of direct ones (:32400) work - only relayed ones do
