I was browsing the “Categories” section on my movies and noticed movies in categories that they shouldn’t be in. After a while of trouble shooting why this was happening, I figured out that Plex is pulling meta data for my movies from TheTVDB when it shouldn’t be. In the “Agents” settings, TheTVDB isn’t even an option for movies.
Here is the categories for “Black Widow” on Plex
But according to The Movie DB (TMDB) there should only be 3 categories:
These extra 4 categories are being pulled from TheTVDB which causes “Black Widow” to be placed in the “Family” category on plex when it shouldn’t be.
Afaik It has always augmented genre info from there so it isn’t a “bug” but I will pass feedback along that the genre info from TVDB does not seem very good.
The reason I concidered it a bug was because TheTVDB isn’t listed as agent for movie meta data so it shouldn’t be pulling any data from TheTVDB. Unless I’m missunderstanding what agents are for.
That menu only applies to the specific agent that’s selected, so in your first screenshot those entries are only relevant if the library is using “The Movie Database” as its agent. If you’re using the modern agent (Plex Movie), nothing in the Agents menu matters - all settings are in the library’s Advanced tab (and there’s no option to prefer one metadata source over another, outside of local metadata):
The Agents section in the server settings is only applicable to the legacy agents.
All agent settings for the new agents live on the Advanced tab of the library properties.
Plex Movie (without “legacy”) pulls from a consolidated database, which combines metadata from a number of sources.
