This is still an unresolved issue.
Some users have extended the recording times selecting number of extra minutes after end time to overcome the problem
I’ve just ran into this as well. I have a python utility processing my TV guide before Plex gets it, so I am going to have it strip anything below say 10 minutes that is between two guide items with the same title, which should mean Plex won’t even see the news break in the guide.
I want to open source this utility once its a bit more mature. But it will only help those using an XML EPG and not those using the Plex built in EPG.
I’m going to release this in the next week or two, but here it is in action:

This forum post gives the position with regarding to this issue
Experiencing this issue too; second part of program split by news or other broadcast doesn’t appear to record. In the case of a split movie, results in the first part only. Not an issue on my Humax DVR.
Will try recording the second part to a different library to see if that works.
Unfortunately the issue we encountered with TiVo EPG data is now also present in Gracenote EPG data
See this post New Plex Guide Very Poor in UK
and for the current position see Live TV EPG - The update you’ve been waiting for
Hi @nrsprice I’ve been curious what the behavior is on the traditional DVR boxes. Does the guide show a split program or not? If it is split how does it convey the recording of that movie? A record icon for both “part 1” and “part 2”? Once the recording is complete is it listed as a single item in your library?
The problem seems obvious. Plex sees the second part of the movie as another showing of the same movie (nothing in the title or synopsis is different) so does not record it. Plex would need to add something that will flag a short gap between 2 ‘identical’ movie showings on the same channel within a short period as been required for recording. This will probably cause 2 parts to the recording but it’s better than nothing (or possibly just include the 5 minute break and extend to make it one recording).
I’ll run a comparison Plex/Humax Freeview DVR for the same movie over this weekend (19 & 20 Dec) and will update here.

Part of the issue here is that Plex indicates that it is going to record the second half when it clearly won’t. A better work around than adding a buffer to the end of the recording for me would be to have the two parts independent of each other so both could be recorded.
Plex flags them for recording like it does with series links but it will not record a duplicate show/movie. If you set up a series link for anything you will see all episodes are flagged for recording but only unrecorded ones will record which is great for series, not so great with a split movie.
Hello,
I set Plex and a Humax Freeview PVR to record ‘Kong: Skull Island’ on ITV2 on Saturday 19/12/20, from 6pm to just before 8.30pm on Freeview.
As you can hopefully see from the attached snaps, the schedule has the film split by a short programme (news?) just after 7pm.
The Humax has recorded both parts of the film, albeit as separate programmes.
Plex has recorded just one, seemingly the first part only.
Hope this helps.
Hope you can fix asap!
Thanks,
NickP
This bug is really annoying when you forget to manually add enough buffer.
Plex knows what the film is so could look up the running time and see the program is nowhere near long enough to be the complete film. Then look for the same film on the same channel starting within a short period of time.
I have migrated to the new Gracenote guide and the very first recording did exactly the same - ie a film separated by an interlude news program shows as both sections scheduled to record (from a one-click record selection in the Guide) and verified by the 2 x red dots. Only the first half recorded. The next recording of a film has resulted in only the first 5 minutes actually being recorded - what is that all about?
This is primarily what I bought the Plex pass for and if it’s not functioning then the DVR is clearly not fit for purpose.
See my earlier post here Bug: Movies split by news or other short program are not recording the second half which acknowledges the issue
Dear Sa2000,
Is there a development in progress to resolve this issue? Could you please advise on the likely scheduling of the fix?
Many thanks.
Is there a fix planned? Seems like this has been a problem that’s been ongoing with no commitment to address.
We don’t seem to get any updates any more.
I have asked for an update on this
