Bug: No ALAC playback on 2024 Samsung Tizen TV despite native support

I bought a new 2024 Samsung Tizen TV, installed Plex on it and tried to play my music library. Most of it is ALAC m4a.
While mp3 files are working fine, the ALAC playback doesn’t work. The song gets loaded, meta data and album art get displayed, but no sound and playback progress is stuck at 0.00. This happens with any ALAC, purchased as well as CD rips.
I’ve been using Plex on a Samsung Smart-Hub TV for the past 10 years without issues, ALAC playback was perfectly fine. The Samsung support confirmed that the new TV supports ALAC as ever.
In the Plex Media Server.log it says “Unable to find client profile for device; platform=Tizen, platformVersion=8, device=24_NIKEL_QTV, model=GQ43Q60DAUXZG”

Also, I’m unable to cast anything to the Samsung Plex app, neither from the iOS app, nor from the web ui (as a remote control). I can select the TV as a player, but every time I hit play on the iOS app or the web ui, an error message pops up on the TV about an error while loading a playlist item. This happens with any kind of media, video and audio.

Just to clarify, this is not a transcoding problem. All Samsung TVs have native ALAC support, so the Plex app would normally be supposed to direct play the ALAC files. The Orca Plex app on my old Samsung TV had no problems doing this.
Also, my Plex server is running on a MacBook Pro, so there would definitely be sufficient processing power.

When I put an ALAC file on a USB drive the TV’s stock media player plays it flawlessly.

The network connection is fine, both, server and TV, are directly wired to the router, I can watch a 20GB BlueRay rip smoothly.

I’ve been having the same issue with my Samsung TV attempting to play ALAC-encoded files. The only difference is that my TV was from 2020. But otherwise it runs Tizen and would seem comparable.

I’m guessing that there’s some issue playing the audio stream directly (though I don’t know why there would be), and Plex doesn’t realize it needs to transcode into another codec (e.g. FLAC, AAC, MPEG-3) due to the lack of client profile.

So it looks like Plex is indeed trying to transcode to aac

My guess is that Plex is trying to transcode ALAC to AAC, but breaking somewhere along the way.

Yes, you’re right. It does try to transcode but apparently doesn’t know to what format because of “Unable to find client profile for device…".
Question is, why does it try to transcode in the first place? Samsung TVs have native ALAC support, that’s why I bought it. If I would want Plex to transcode my music to some lossy format, I could have bought any other TV brand.

The Plex app for Tizen seems to be a bug fest anyway. When it plays back music and you leave the player screen to browse the library the transport buttons on the TV’s remote control stop working. So in order to pause or skip the currently playing track you need to navigate back to the player screen via the little playing-now-icon at the top.
But the only way for the playing-now-icon to actually show is when you select a single track. When you select an album or a playlist for playback you don’t even get the playing-now-icon, so there’s no way to go back to the player screen and you’re stuck with whatever is playing until you select a different track. It’s absurd.

Also, as mentioned earlier, casting to the Tizen Plex app using the iOS or web app as remote control doesn’t work at all, no matter if it’s video or audio.
Does anyone from Plex even bother to read this forum?
It’s a real pity. Plex was great until a couple of years ago. The old Plex for Tizen by Orca was great. I guess it’s time to say good bye and switch to Emby.

Any news on this? Samsung tech support has confirmed that ALAC is supported. It would be really great to get some feedback from you guys.

Still not working. No direct Play, no transcoding, the Plex-app simply refuses to play any ALAC.
Please fix this!!!
