BUG: play after navigating restarts from beginning

I rewind (usually 10-20 seconds) a lot.

Recently (sometime in the last month or so) on my Roku Ultra, when I rewind (actually when I navigate to any particular position in the video) and then play, I see the loading 33%… which stops and restarts and then playing starts from the beginning of the video instead of where I was on the navigation bar.

This is happening playing from the plex server on my local network, not remote.

Before this was happening, I remember that frequently when I pressed play I’d get an error screen saying there had been a problem loading the video and giving me an option to retry. Retrying worked 99+% of the time.

I don’t know if this is a change on the client or the server, but both are up-to-date.

This happens incredibly frequently and is incredibly annoying as I try to remember where I was, and sometimes happens again when I navigate back to where I was, so I have to navigate again (which isn’t all that quick).

This! I am experiencing the exact same behavior. Roku Ultra, Synology DS418play. The scenario is:
I record NBC Nightly News every day (this also happens to other shows, not just the news). Most days we watch it after it has finished recording. I do not run auto commercial skip on this show because it gets it horribly wrong.
At the commercial, I always use the remote to skip it. I click six times (or whatever) and the 33% shows on the screen like normal, however it then immediately reverts to 13%, grinds for a bit, and starts the video at the beginning.
As soon as the video starts at the beginning, playing around with it I have discovered that if I immediately fast forward to the position I want (say, 22:30) and press play it will usually, but not always, start there.
The next commercial break the same thing happens: I fast forward, 33% to 13%, video to the beginning, fast forward again to the new position (say 24:40), usually works.
This behavior started relatively recently, but I don’t know exactly when. Past two to three weeks. I’m willing to revert to a few previous versions when I have time to test, but it won’t be soon.
I’m happy to provide logs if needed.

Thanks for confirming it isn’t only me!
When/If you get around to testing, (assuming Plex hasn’t fixed the issue before that :crossed_fingers:) please reply w/ whatever you find, positive or negative.

Also, I can see how I could revert the server version (although I wonder about possible db issues), but I don’t know any way to revert or actually influence in any way the client version on my roku.

I have this issue also with the released and beta versions of Roku app, it’s very frustrating trying to fast forward and then end back at the beginning. I wonder if this has anything to do with their prep of the “skip intro” code.

I noticed that my .mp4 files don’t have this issue, however recorded videos and ripped movies (.mkv) have this issue.

Sorry, I have no solution to this most annoying problem but I’d like to add my voice to getting it looked at.

Is there anything I can supply to help? Logs?

Using PMS with Windows 10 + Roku.

Hi All. I think we have tracked this down. We’ll have a update coming soon to correct the issue. :crossed_fingers:

@ljunkie Thanks for the update, and :crossed_fingers: .
Could you tell us generally where you think the problem is, ie server or client and if client is it Roku specific?

It was a client regression. It affected the scenario of a seek failing and the Roku attempting to restart/resume after a failure. During the seek, the position was set to 0 but it was seeking to X. Upon a failure, we attempted to restart/resume using the current position, which ended up being 0.

The fix is out in the Preview release, we’ll be updating the official channel too, but that will take some time before being approved.

Thanks for the explanation and for the fix!

I added the Plex preview channel (thank you for the link) and tested last night, and it works.
I encountered a couple of times when I went back 10-20sec and it just reloaded right away, a couple of times when it restarted once and then loaded, and several more times (seeming more frequent after about 1/2 through the video) when it decided there was an error and gave me the screen asking to retry (and I forget the other options because I always have selected retry and it has (I think) always succeeded when I do.

I am still experiencing this issue on my roku streaming stick+ 3810X

  • Version 9.3.0 Build 4172-50

Both on the regular version and the Preview version.

  • Plex Version 6.6 Build 4
  • Plex Preview Version 6.6 Build 4

They both say the same version number. I ran the “Check for Updates”, but says they are up to date. Is there another way to update to version 6.6.2?

My Roku stick updated the Plex Preview to Version 6.6 Build 5. And I am still having the fast forward issue.
If I fast forward or rewind, there is no movement. It just goes back to where I started from.
