[Bug] Plex on Android shows 'Background' image as thumbnail

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6562
Player Version#: 9.23.0

Hi,

today, the Google Play Store updated my Plex App to the most recent version (9.23.0) and when I opened it a few minutes ago, I thought the media scanner went haywire since all, I mean literally every single thumbnail, was seemingly lost.

For every video I have (that is normal videos, like kurzgesagt videos, not movies), there is a .jpg stored along side it which the media scanner correctly interprets as thumbnail, the so called “Poster”. And this has worked pretty much flawlessly since I started using Plex.
It still works in the current server version, as the Web App still displays the correct thumbnail. It’s just the Android app which now displays the “Background” image instead.

This seems to only affect the media type “Other videos”.
I tested my “Movies” library (=library type) as well just to check, but no, it was all good there. I did not test the TV shows or Photos library types

I believe this is a bug (as afaik all the other Plex Players continue to use the Poster-image and it only affects a single library type) that is client side only, since nothing has changed server side for a very long time.
If the old Plex server version sounds suspicious, my other remote Plexserver exhibits the exact same problem and is on ver. 1.32.1.6999.

Long story short, here are two images showing the issue:

If there is a setting for that, I’m sorry to report this as a bug and would be very happy if someone told where that setting is. If this is a bug, I would be very happy if this one gets fixed⠀:)

Can someone confirm this bug? Or possibly confirm that it is working on your device and just a configuration mistake on my side?

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong

I made a music video library in an “other videos” type library months ago and used my own .jpg in the folder

None of them show up in any android tv device or HTPC

It works in Plex for Windows and android mobile so it sure seems like a bug

Just noticed that if there are subfolders, it partially shows the correct thumbnails (i.e. for the first few videos), but then again subfolders cause Plex to display all items in a 3 by X grid instead of the normal 2 by X.

I’m sure that’s all something the Plex Devs would have to look into.

I’ll also see if I can check some older versions to see when exactly this happened, and hope that

DOWNLOAD APK (Plex Pass required):

is just a loose technical advise that the one-time activation doesn’t work with side-loaded apps (which shouldn’t really affect the thumbnail test)

So it seems this bug has only been occurring since 9.23.0. In 9.21.3, all thumbnails load correctly. Tested both versions side by side on my phone.

Still persists in 9.24.0.
Could we maybe get some feedback by the devs that it’s currently being worked on or at least tracked? I don’t want to ping random devs, something like a quick “WIP” would be awesome.

Thanks for report.

Unlike the Windows app, I feel like half the user experience is circumventing severe chronic bugs that exist for as long as I use the app. Even more worrysome is that I reported the bug literally mere days after the problematic update released and after almost 3 months, not even the beta version has fixed a what seems like a trivial code error.
This appears to be only an issue with Android, I’ve had a good experience with a quite minor Win PMP bug, and with minor a mean a tiny edge of a tiny circle wasn’t displaying correctly. And it’s not like it’s a niche app with 10M+ downloads on the Google Play Store, with mostly every download being a paying user.
I’ll try to monitor this bug as long as can, but I don’t see me confirming this bug for every release/update that comes in the next dozen months… But I hope it doesn’t take another 3 months to fix :)

…And 9.31.0

Most recent beta (10.0.0.4105-beta) still didn’t fix this…
