Bug: Plexamp skipping tracks without playing them

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517
Player Version#: 3.5.0

Plexamp on my Pixel 4a has always been something of a mixed bag - sometimes it works perfectly first time, sometimes it takes 3-4mins to load a song before eventually starting to work, sometimes it just shows a black screen that can only be resolved with multiple restarts.

Starting today I can no longer listen to music at all - it just starts cycling through songs endlessly without playing a second of any of them. I’m hosting my collection on a Raspberry Pi 4 model B. Logs attached here.

I’ve paid for a Plex Pass for 8 months now, but strongly considering cancelling and moving to an alternative solution if this can’t be promptly resolved - for a premium service it’s pretty hideously buggy.

It’s missing on your server.

Network error (404) occurred

Server logs would indicate where it was looking.

Move the files where your server can see and access them.

Cancelled my Plex Pass - cheers!

Just to clarify, we’ve explained why the issue is happening, and how to resolve, and you’re cancelling your Plex Pass?

Not sure what else you were looking for here.

I just wanted to say that I personally use the Pixel 4a as well. Zero problems. So, Plexamp has no problem with this particular phone.

Same here. Pixel 4a, and Pixel 2 before that.

I am experiencing this skipping of music files in both Plex for FireTV and Plexamp for iOS. Issue started earlier this week, I suspect after the latest server update.
This only appears to happen with music only. Movies and shows play fine.
It doesn’t matter if the music is within a playlist or album, it skips until it can play something… maybe from cache.

My Android Plexamp and Plex app currently do not experience this issue.

That is a very confusing matrix of working vs not working. It’s possible the working scenario is playing from cache.

Please post Plexamp log along with server log so we can actually lend a hand and not just guess your server files are missing

Mahalo nui loa Bradda Elan. Attached are the logs.

Aloha!

Based on Plexamp log, getting 403 (forbidden) from server:

You have debug logs disabled on the server but there are no entries between:

Jul 22, 2021 17:50:16.554 [0x7000072bf000] WARN - QueryParser: Invalid field 'pinnedContentDirectoryID' found, ignoring.
Jul 22, 2021 18:06:07.477 [0x700006ea7000] WARN - JobManager: Could not find job for handle 1291

Plexamp is hitting this URL e.g. to get media: https://108-18-116-151.7c8ba282d32d43cfbd5003705dd901d0.plex.direct:23833/library/parts/214552/1608254145/file.flac

That should provide some clues but I’m not sure why it’s getting a 403 (proxy in the middle???)

@elan
Thank you.. that enabled me to do some testing.

Based upon what you said, I did some investigation.

  1. My Android PLEXAMP was converting playback from FLAC to OPUS and working fine. When I set to maximum over cellular, it shows up as direct play as FLAC and continues to work.
  2. My iOS Plexamp was set to maximum direct play FLAC over wifi and cellular… which is skipping, however if i changed to a lower bitrate, it started playing in OPUS.

The behavior unfortunately doesn’t help explain why you’re getting the 403. Do you have any weird proxies in the middle? Can you enable debug logging on the server and hit it in such a way that it skips and then provide logs?

Debug enabled.
Rebooted the computer the server is on and tested with Plexamp for iOS and FireTV.
No proxies enabled.
Music plays fine in web player on local network.

Is this a shared user? It appears you need to now enable the “downloads” permission for them in order to use Plexamp.

Thank you Elan.
Yes it is a shared User Account. I enabled download and it now works.

CHEE HOO!

It had worked without issue before, so I never considered that as the problem.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate your participation with in the forums and continued customer feedback/support to making PLEX the best. You are the best too.
Mahalo,

I had the same issue. Coincidentally I had just reorganized my media. I had to remap my music folder the the Plex docker. Works like a charm.
