no matter where I edit my profile picture, web browser, IOS, you name it, I can choose, resize and upload a profile picture for my main account but it is not displayed, only the first letter of my user name.
Profile pictures do however show up correctly for the managed profiles I set up for my family members…
Same server version, but unless the profile pictures are hosted on the server installation (for me on Synology NAS), which I don’t think they are, this shouldn’t matter… Aren’t the profiles hosted centrally on the plex.tv website servers?
Also same issue seen if you create a Managed Account and try set profile photo for them.
I do believe the photos are stored on Plex.tv so nothing to do with local home server. How do we notify Plex when they don’t accept tech support emails?
Thanks. Fingers crossed someone sees this. Maybe some can X/Tweet them… I don’t have an account or I would
I have a feeling is broken though. If you use a browser and try to upload photo you get ‘Network Error’. I suspect they have something broken on the backend but no clue what…
Not sure if this will work but I logged the issue with the Plex billing dept hoping they might at least let the correct team know… will see what happens. I will let you all know if they reply.
I had a response from the Plex team saying that they tried changing the profile avatar and had no issues.
I tried again myself but same issue… they have asked me to post in this forum for the community to help. But not sure how well the community can help on this as it’s Plex servers.
I ran across this issue this morning when attempting to change the profile picture of a newly added user in MyHome. What finally worked for me is reducing the size of the picture (I used resizepixel.com) so that the highest pixels on either width or height was under 300 and upload it on the computer that the plex server is on. It should be easier, I agree…but that’s what worked for me. Hopefully this helps!!
On a whim, I’ve tried on an older device (an iPhone 8). I’ve downloaded the same picture from Google Photos onto that device as I didn’t have it on there, tried uploading it via the iOS app… and it worked. No resizing required. And it got me thinking:
What if it’s a codec problem? If the pictures we’re trying to use are encoded the same way and the server doesn’t like the way it is encoded? Maybe it’s the HEIF format? Try transcoding it to JPEG. That’s probably what Google Photos did…
Yes I gave Plex a link to this thread but have not heard back from them after that.
Glad it worked for you on an older device! The photo I am uploading is a JPEG already. I have tried doing it on Windows, Mac, iOS, WebApp, Desktop App, iOS app. All give me the same result with that Network Error.
Least you have a workaround. I do have an Android phone somewhere. Might try that and see if I get same result…
I’ve just encountered this; I don’t get an error though. The save screen will either just disappear or the save button will be highlighted again after 5 seconds as if nothing happened.
It depends where you are changing the photo. If you use the Plex desktop app or web app I seem to get that Network Error which is nothing to do with my network. But if I change it on iOS app then I don’t get any error, it just acts like it saves it but then nothing happens.
I haven’t tried using my Android phone yet as haven’t had time but will try test that today.
Even if this issue is to do with photo size they really need a descriptive error telling us what is accepted etc…
On the webapp I don’t get an error, I hadn’t tried the desktop app. It’s like it saves, but then nothing. I can’t edit any of the managed accounts either. I created a new test account, and I can’t change the profile picture. Something is broken.
Agreed. I also created a new account and same issue. I also see same issue on Managed Accounts. It’s definitely broken… it’s just how do we get Plex to look at this… they don’t have tech support contacts. Which seems stupid as Plex Pass members who pay for their product should at least have someone they can speak with for tech support instead of only the community.
