Bug: Roku lists 4K 20mbit as a quality option

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151

If I am playing a 4K video on one of my Rokus and go into the Quality settings, it lists 4K as options for reduced Quality. For example, 4K 20mbit. If I select 4K 20mbit and check the Plex dashboard the video is actually being transcoded to 1080p 20mbit.

I tried the same thing on my Samsung TV and it lists all of the qualities as 1080 xx mbit.

From my understanding, Plex will only transcode video to 1080p so the options of 4K are incorrect.

I’m not familiar with the Roku client… but that understanding isn’t generally true. I know that the iOS/tvOS clients will also transcode to 4K resolution from adequate sources.

I have never read a single post confirming Plex will transcode to 4K. Every post has been to the contrary and I have never personally seen Plex transcode to 4K.

Can you post some evidence supporting Plex will transcode to 4K?

Here you go

Well damn! I just checked my iPhone and it works!

Well there is a bug somewhere because my Roku client shows 4K transcoding options but the server transcodes to 1080p.

Your server logs might show why it’s actually outputting a 1080p resolution stream… could be there’s some aspect of the file that makes it explode the transcoded output’s bitrate, exceeding a given threshold – in that case Plex server/client will “negotiate” what should be working instead.

Good idea, I’ll try that! Thanks!

I think there is a bug here; I’ve seen the same thing.

Note that the Roku lists 4K options, and then 720p options? There are no 1080p options in the list.

@Tortuga Thank you are reporting. This is a known bug. Giving it a bump internally.

Thank you!
