Just this morning I tried searching for the TV show Mission Hill. It came up in the results. I went in and saw a bunch of metadata issues with the show. I assumed I must have not set up DVD versus Aired order correctly, so I went to adjust the files, only to notice I can’t get the file info on the episodes. I also can’t refresh metadata or do anything else to the files, or remove the show from my library. And if I click through to an episode, I can’t actually play it.
I checked my storage server and I definitely never ripped my DVD copy of Mission Hill, so I have no idea why Plex thinks I did. When I go through “TV Shows”, Mission Hill isn’t listed, so it sounds like this is a database issue?
I noticed that below Mission Hill on the search results are a bunch of movies I’ve never heard of, including two movies called Mission Hill, then Mission Impossible – there are literally dozens of results, and I’m sure I don’t have any of them.
It is a new “feature” and it makes Plex money. So you either need to quit using Plex or learn to live with it. Plex is not going to change it unless they actually go through some kind of revelation and decides that users are actually people.
This is a bug, but unfortunately Plex considers it a feature. Welcome to the symphony of voices rising in opposition to this user-unfriendly “feature.”
Oh, this is a feature? How do I use the feature? When I go into the show that I don’t have, I can’t do anything with it. It kinda just looks like it’s a listing for a show but you can’t actually watch it?
Well, I guess technically my bug report is solved in the sense that this somehow isn’t a bug, but I’m still pretty confused. What is it an ad for? When I click through to the show, there’s no option to watch the show, or pay or sign up for anything, it’s just a listing of the show.
It’s not an ad. Plex has upgraded their system to be a media “aggregator”.
noun
noun: aggregator; plural noun: aggregators
1.
COMPUTING
a website or program that collects related items of content and displays them or links to them.
Most modern media player operating systems have what’s called aggregator intelligence that make suggestions based upon algorithms and your personal viewing habits.
Plex is merely copying this mechanism into their own platform. Roku, AppleTV, Android TV, and others all do the same thing. None of this is anything new or extraordinary, just a bit disjointed considering it’s attempting to be cohesive against peoples local libraries of media. Examples of Roku and AppleTV aggregation below:
Okay. I understand the principle I guess, though again when I made this thread I didn’t understand that’s what was going on because nothing about the presentation tipped me off. But when I click on the thing I want to watch in Plex, I don’t get any of those options, it’s just completely empty. Even if I wanted this functionality (which, again, I didn’t know was a functionality), it doesn’t actually do anything. Screenshot below
The Plex Web interface installed on your server is set back, behind the one that’s available here https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/
Another tip, go ahead and click on Add to Watchlist and then go to HOME, click on Watchlist, then click on the movie, then you should see a panel underneath like so.
So, I’ve discovered that for any film you wish to add to your Watchlist, it can stay remained in your list however, Plex currently doesn’t have a error message of some kind to let you know that specific film is currently unwatchable or that no services have it available to stream.
I used Klondike above as you see, this film is available to add to your watchlist however because it’s not available on any streaming services nor in your local library, it shows nothing beneath for results. They need to put a message there.
Oh, this is a beta thing? I must have opted in to a beta at some point. How do I opt out? I have “Experimental Features: Disabled” in my settings, which I thought was the beta stream. I don’t really want to be a part of beta features.
Edit: I see the no sources issue is because Klondike isn’t available yet, thanks for checking that out for me. I guess I’ll have to keep trying to figure out how to use this feature until I can get opted out.
Yes, apparently this was unleashed on EVERY admin account and did not matter whether you were on the public or beta download channel, nor did it matter if you had EXPERIMENTAL features turned on or off.
I suspect they will get that sorted quickly because that issue impacts the ad dollars they are so eager to wring from us with this ad platform they have built.
