Bug: Supplied poster images do not match movies as expected

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395

Following the official naming conventions, if I put these movies and a poster image in the same directory (regardless of the directory name):

Movie Title (1980) - 1080p.mkv
Movie Title (1980) - 1080p {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv
Movie Title (1980) - 4K {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv
Movie Title (1980).jpg

…none of these movies will be matched with the image file “Movie Title (1980).jpg” as a default poster image and the image will not appear as a potential poster image choice in the user interface as expected.

What I would expect to happen is that supplied poster images without extra metadata in their file name would match as a default unless more specific files names are supplied. So for instance in this case:

Movie Title (1980) - 1080p {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv
Movie Title (1980) {edition-Director's Cut}.jpg
Movie Title (1980).jpg

…I would expect “Movie Title (1980) {edition-Director’s Cut}.jpg” to match “Movie Title (1980) - 1080p {edition-Director’s Cut}.mkv” across multiple resolutions, unless a poster image with a more specific file name was supplied.

This would make dealing with posters of movie files with multiple resolutions and editions in the same directory much easier, especially as default posters found online can change greatly from time to time if library metadata is refreshed periodically. This would allow me to use just one poster file for multiple variations rather than have a separate poster file for every single movie variation that I have.

Otherwise, please make it more clear in the documentation that poster image files must match the movie’s file name exactly in order to be recognized and provide examples.

That is a wrong expectation. The poster has to have the same file name as the video, minus the file name extension of course.
In other words, you cannot share the poster among several editions. In many cases this is even a good thing, because the Director’s Cut may have a different poster than the theatrical edition etc.

In general, it is recommeded to give each edition its own, separate folder.

My posters are named poster.jpg and they work as expected.

Also background.jpg and theme.mp3 work without problem. Both in Movie and TV libraries.

This is the way :+1:

Right, I see that the documentation for movie editions at https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/ notes that - I’d suggest that it also include an explicit “best practices” example for adding local movie assets for different movie editions. Right now it simply refers to the local files documentation, which is less helpful.

I would also clarify the documentation at https://support.plex.tv/articles/local-files-for-trailers-and-extras/ as well, adding that “MovieName (Release Date).ext” cannot be used in subfolders or for movie editions.

But it can be used in subfolders and for editions. Just not for several editions at the same time.

I see now, thank you for clarifying that!
