[BUG] Xbox One X playback of movies with DTS sound is silent

Bump again

Hi all. I’ll be taking a look at this soon, thanks for the samples and logs.

There does appear to be an issue with DTS audio when the DTS Sound Unbound app is installed, I’ve reached out to Microsoft to try to figure out what’s going on there. For users where they’re using passthrough with an audio receiver instead, I’m curious if you have multiple audio tracks in the file and the DTS tracks that work are the first track and the ones that don’t are always non-first?

It’s great this is now being looked at. I use the dts sound unbound app, and paid for the license to use with headphones. If the bug is with sound unbound app, would removing it be a possible workaround until the issue has been fixed?

I uninstalled the dts sound unbound app and dts audio now produces sound to headphones. Hopefully the bug with dts sound unbound app will be resolved and I can reinstall it.

@jshoughton yes that’s correct, to disable on-system decoding for DTS (which is what this issue appears related to) you need to remove the DTS Sound Unbound app from your console for now.

I don’t have the DTS sound app installed but still don’t get audio on certain files as per my original post.

Have you tried the test file?

I still have the DTS app installed. Just saw a plex update on the xbox and thought i’d have a look. Seems like all DTS content is being transcoded to aac on my system now. Native DTS would be better, but at least I have no issue with no sound anymore.

…nevermind. Not working. I’ve uninstalled the DTS app for now, that fixed it this time.

Any update on this Plex support?

Can I ask why can’t we have an option in the app to just passthrough all audio, like the Xbox Blu-ray app?

Looking at previous threads it seems there was this option some time ago but it disappeared?

Passthrough audio of everything including DTS works fine on Xbox. Go to Xbox Settings > Volume & audio output > additonal options and make sure ā€œAllow passthroughā€ is enabled – Plex will then pass through all audio your receiver or soundbar can accept. The issue here is that without passthrough, DTS audio is not playing correctly if you have the DTS Sound Unbound app installed. It will correctly transcode if that app is not installed and passthrough is disabled/not available.

Yes I know, I am the original creator of this thread :grinning:

The issue as stated is ā€œOnly problem is movie files with DTS only soundtrack - Plex plays these but I hear no sound at all.ā€

I do have passthrough enabled. I will try installing the DTS sound app.

If you have issues with passthrough disabled then that’s another different problem.

What is your AV setup? Some displays with eARC over HDMI do not support DTS passthrough because of licensing issues even if the AVR or Soundbar do support DTS (I know recent LG displays act like this) – however, without the DTS Unbound app installed, I wouldn’t think that the TV would report to the Xbox/Plex that DTS can be passed through. Would help to understand your AV setup, and maybe a log that includes client logging when silent playback occurs with passthrough enabled and DTS app not installed.

I’ve already posted a sample file and logs in this thread!

Plex support, any update please?

I’ve just tried with DTS sound app installed and still get no sound with multiple movies.

However, I’ve just tried another DTS 5.1 movie and I correctly get DTS detected and sound. I’ll do some more digging, some films are fine, typically ones with a single DTS 5.1 audio track, it’s one’s with multiple audio tracks that seem to have problems.

To be clear my Xbox is directly connected via HDMI cable to my AVR, no eARC.

Well, I cannot work out why some files are fine and some are silent.

Plex support, what did you find out via the sample file and logs please ?

Come on Plex support, you have the data…

@e10kstarfire Just as a data point, with the problematic files with no audio do you have audio if you play them with the Xbox connected directly to your display (ie no AVR in the mix)?

@Moussa I only have a projector as my display which has no sound so always go via the AVR

Any updates?

This issue does t seem to have progressed. Has there been any update regarding the dts sound unbound not decoding the audio. I bought the licence for dts based on plex stating support (prior to strike through being applied to that particular feature text!) more than half my media has dts sound and as my plex server is raspberry pi based transcoding the audio doesn’t seem to work very well, so the dts decoder is the only way it will work

Also the limitation of anything more than 5.1 channel audio always being transcoded is frustrating, why can’t it be direct played? As the Xbox can decode it when playing direct from disc.

Same problem. Instead DTS sound i hear silent.
Passthrough enabled Xbox settings and Plex settings.
My config:
Denon S660H <–eARC—> LG TV
Denon S660H <—HDMI–> XBOX series X
