By Composer

very frustrating that this feature request is open since 2013 but nothing has changed.
Does anyone know of a library management tool with proper support for classical music?

It’s 2021. No Composer tag in a media library? Why would it be so difficult to add the basic fields of music data? So many other great things have been added to Plex.
Please also offer a proper view by Genre. People have criticized iTunes for years, but the view by Songs in 3 columns and the tracks below was absolutely perfect. That would be a great model.
Thanks!

I found a roundabout solution I thought i’d share. I’ve been using PicardBrainz to get the “official” data for each record. Then Metadatics to add my own Genres and move the performing artists data to Comments, then replaced the Track Artist, Album Artist and Composer with the name of the composer.
I just found that I could keep Album Artist with the name of the composer and put back the performing artists in Album Artist. This leads Plex to tag each record with the Album Artist (aka Composer) for the whole album, and indicates the performer in front of each track. This is something iTunes didn’t do well. So far this seems to be a good solution. I hope it can help someone else.
In summary: get the info from PicardBrainz and only replace the Album Artist field with the info you would use for the Composer field.

Not going to lie I’m a little shocked to see this was made in 2013. I’m voting for this as well because there’s an additional component with adding a Composer. Most people who collect Audiobooks will add either in the Comments Section, or in the Composer section who the Narrator(s) are. For example The memoir I’m Your Huckleberry written by Val Kilmer will have an Album Artist of Val Kilmer, but the Composer (Narrators) are Will Forte, George Newbern, and Mare Winningham.

Another way of applying Composers is by Podcasts people save. The Podcasts can have Composers as the hosts, or guest hosts of sorts.

Right. New to Plex. Could not believe I could not show albums by composer. Came here to find the solution. Find this thread. YEARS OLD.

Well, after my trial ends, that will be that. No more Plex.

Baffling, coz how difficult can it be?

I actually have a question, what were you using Composer for? I ask because I myself have found a couple of workarounds. For Audiobooks I use Style (Composer as Narrators), and for Music I removed all Mood, and used Mood for featured Artists. May be a workaround for you?

Thank you very much for your offer of a workaround, but I’ll have to pass. All kinds of reasons.

I have a large collection of classical music. Sometimes the brain says, ah, let’s listen to some Mozart or Beethoven or Schubert or Rossini or…etc. I would like to have a central starting point e.g. Mozart and from there browse my personal catalog.

Should be simple.

And other tags/data such as Conductor, place, live/not, publisher, multiple CD albums.
Thanks!

Add my vote to the request to add “Composer” to the sort fields in Plexamp.

“Composer” is truly essential to classical music and seems like it would be easy to implement, since Plexamp can currently sort by other tags embedded in music files – ie, genre.

It is truly perPLEXing whey this has never been added before. :slightly_smiling_face:

Honestly, while I have a lifetime Plex Pass, this oversight in Plexamp will cause me to look for a better solution to play flac files from my Plex server on my mobile device. The developers of Plexamp must be the most obstinate people for refusing to add such a simple thing as this request is so long-standing.

Please, please add the composer field/tagging.

+1

That field would also be useful for movies. I often choose to watch a movie based on who composed the movie score / soundtrack.

+1 here…

I would consider this an essential addition to make Plex suitable for Classical Music. I browse by composer far more than I browse by artist.

Add me as a +1 for this feature. Plex is amazing (especially PlexAmp), but needs to run the full gambit of available tags so music libraries can be much more robust. Classical music is almost always about the Composer, Conductor and Orchestra/Choir (or Soloist). We should AT LEAST be able to sort by Composer, but in my opinion, Conductor is almost nearly as important for classical music.

Come on Plex developers… let’s make this happen! It’s 2022, do you know where your metadata is?

2023… the year of adding ‘Composers’ and ‘Conductors’ at a minimum to the main Library page ? yes please

Although essential for classical music, a composer field would also be useful for other genres. (To find cover versions or artists that composed songs played by other bands i.e.)

So - yes - please add a composer field!

So we’re hitting 10 years with this request. Minimum effort. Would make Plex usable for classical music. Absolutely ridicculous.

Really need at least a composer tag for my music! Please!

While Apple is introducing “Apple Music Classical” for listeners of classical music, in Plex we still can’t even sort by composer. The long requested support for a composer tag ist a must, IMHO.

How is this possible? How can such a simple thing still not be present in a streaming server with a dedicated music client?
