I’d like to add settings to the “Limit remote stream bitrate” dropdown box. The problem I’m having is that I have limited upload bandwidth (15mbps) and want to be able to stream to a 3 remote clients at a time.
Now, settings to 720p4mbps would certainly fit the bill - that’s 12mbps, and gives room for variable bitrate. So, I chose this setting, then had Plex create optimized versions at “Optimize for Mobile” which ends up being 720p4mbps! Excellent! Except that this ends up triggering transcoding on everything, because according to the logs Plex is adding a 1.5x fudge factor to account for variable bitrate, and I’d rather avoid excess transcoding. 720p 3mbps? Nope, that ends up being calculated at 4.5. Going down to 2mbps works, but looks terrible, and ultimately 3 streams @ 2mbps = 6mbps; leaving a lot of bandwidth on the table.
Unfortunately, the next step up in that dropdown box is 1080p8mbps! If I select this, I’m pushing upwards of 24mbps, and that’s a problem.
Basically, I just want to be able to direct stream 720p4mbps (or I’d settle for 720p3mbps) but transcode anything else down to that level. It seems odd to me that choosing 720p4mbps as the remote stream limit won’t accomplish that, but whatever.
Is it possible to “simply” (?) add an entry or two to that drop down box? Maybe 5 or 6mbps?
Thanks for any help you can offer!
