Can not find attached HDD after updating mediaserver

Server Version#:1.32.7.7621-871adbd44

Had to uninstall/reinstall (from plex website) a new ubuntu (on PI4) mediaserver to resolve the issue of not finding a tv tuner (finds it now… that part is perfect now).

The issue: my attached HDD (‘New Volume’) that holds all my media is not seen by plex.

Normal path /media/scottj/‘New Volume’

Plex can get to /media/scottj but no further.

Help me obi wan, you’re my only hope. I assume it is a permissions thing. I tried to apply some permissions to the volume but obviously I did it wrong as it still is not found. [or perhaps my issue has nothing to do with permissions]

For what it’s worth, my original plex install found the hdd no problem.

From ubuntu I can browse the drive and the media… plex on the other hand can’t get in.

Linux permission guide

chown -R plex:plex /media/scottj/
find /media/scottj/ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;; find /media/scottj/ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;

NO NEED to give plex ownership of your media .. that’s wasteful.

The problem here is /media/<username> (the automounter) is grabbing the HDDs and causing the root problem.

You want the files to be owned by yourself but allow Plex to read them

  1. Don’t put them where the automounter does – Nautilus does bad things.
  2. Don’t put them in your home directory either
  3. Pick any other non-conflicting place and mount the drive(s) there.

Change the names as you wish but consider this example as it works for all Linux.

Thanks so much @ChuckPa !

That did the trick. Much appreciated.
