Can Plex DVR record cable channels like AMC, FX, ESPN, HBO etc

Is there a way to add cables only channels like AMC, FX, ESPN, HBO etc within my Roku/Windows that will allow me to record and save live programming on my Plex server using the Plex DVR service? I get many via Sling but can’t record them using Plex DVR.

You can use a HD Homerun Prime as an example to record from on cable. This is what I use with Plex. However you are going to need to check to see if the channels are DRM protected. HBO for example will almost surely be DRM protected and not able to be recorded.

Having to pay for cable defeats the purpose of going OTA. I have two HD Homerun Extends that integrate OTA channels into my Plex DVR just trying to find a way to make something like Sling which provides AMC, FX, ESPN etc to act like a HD Homerun in Plex DVR. This way all my channels would be in my program guide and I could record and have everything integrated into my Plex Media Server.

Guess we’re not getting the question being asked since you said “Is there a way to add cables only channels”.
I guess upon further reading some of the channels you mentioned aren’t cable only. For example HBO has a separate subscription service.

Plex DVR is not currently going to be able to record streams from the net. There are legal ways to do this however with software such as Playon. Playon is sort of like a PVR/DVR for online digital content that can monitor and record some shows off of the net. Some people like it and other don’t. I believe they have a free trial you could use to test it’s functionality out.

You should also check out the 3rd party channels available for Plex use as some of these could also help you out some as well.

“Cutting the cord” sometimes requires a different lifestyle if you will. Some of the channels you may appreciate on cable/sat just won’t be available OVA.

I was actually looking today to see if anyone had asked about a “playon” type feature within the DVR functionality. Wife and I just moved to the country and cable is not an option, only satellite and DSL. We are trying to avoid signing a 2 year agreement and are trialing direct tv now over 25mb DSL. It’s not bad by an means it’s just we both would like a DVR, something that service hasn’t figured out yet. Might jump on board though with the OTA dvr portion eventually.

What Country?
There are a LOT of OTA signals out there - maybe you’re lucky and have some altering your DNA right now.
