Can Server also be client as HTPC and if so, how best to secure setup

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2621
Player Version#: 4.34.4

I have had a server for a number of years, it’s getting old now though and time to update. For my purposes, I don’t really need a server and clients, but just want an HTPC sort of setup, but with all the good things that comes with Plex pass. I really enjoy Plex’s live TV guide, recording, ad-skipping and have it paired to a HDHomeRun PRIME with Cable Card. I also like the new Crackle movies added.

My goal is to buy an attractive HTPC for living room and connect it to TV via HDMI.
Remote access on server will be disabled.
Content will play directly from server (server will also function as client - is this possible?).
There will only be one user account.
I use Nordvpn and my IP is a static IP and has Nordvpn DNS numbers.
I believe with the VPN on, I can still log into Plex.tv and can download metadata for files, PVR shows from HDHomeRun etc.

With Plex.tv’s SSl certificates, my DNS being encrypted and VPN on, is my system fairly secure, or is there more that needs to be done?

Sure, just install a Plex client on the same computer.

Do I have to install a client or can the server play content directly if hooked up to a TV via HDMI??

The server doesn’t even have an interface. It runs in the background so it can’t play anything. You can use the Plex Web client that comes with it, but you need a Plex client of some sort to playback the content.

Thanks. I will do that. Will the client connect to the server if on same machine with VPN turned on?

The VPN shouldn’t affect it.
